hey i took 2 PSAT practice tests from KAPLAN; one last week and one today. Somehow, i ended up scoring 56 verbal, 69 math, and 68 writing on both of them with a combined score of 193. How accurate do you guys think this score is? Am i going to be scoring in the 190-200 range on the october PSAT??

Practice tests are usually a little bit tougher than the real one. Pardon my asking, but is 190-200 a good thing or a bad thing to you? Some people here would kill themselves on receipt of such a score; others would throw a huge party...

well not bad cause im a freshman... but my goal is still 220ish

go study for some APs

You generally have to get something above 200 to make it to the commencement stage...

i know but all i wanna know is if i should expect a 190-200 on the PSAT i take in october???anybody

You can expect a 190-200 if you don't do anything stupid over summer. You can expect higher if you do even sporadic studying over the summer. I don't mean SAT prep; I mean reading, writing, solving math puzzles, etc.

i hope so man..... im gonna try to improve my math to 6 points and my writing 6 points so i can get atleast a 200...than ill be set for that national merit

Depends on where you are...

In CA, the cutoff is usually in the 220s...

am i the only one who read that he is a freshman? you have plenty of time to get it up to a national merit score...i'd say your about on track.

Yeah, you'll be fine.

But: my practice test scores are always higher than the real thing. My average practice PSAT was 5 points higher than my actual score. Not too big of a gap, true, but enough to make a difference around the cut-offs.

get a TI-89 calculator...that thing has a built-in CAS, yet for some reason they're allowed on the SAT...that should boost your Math score easily :P

be patient with your verbal score. As you take more English classes, your vocabulary will expand, and it will become easier.

is ti 89 better than ti 83? how????what is CAS??

CAS = Computer Algebra System

Type in solve(x^2-9=0,x) and the calculator will say:
x=3 or x=-3

Type in solve(sin(x)=cos(x),x) and the calculator will do that for you, too.

Great for preventing stupid mistakes (I always make sign errors, so by typing in an equation "as is," I avoid sign errors).

Of course, the trick is being able to reduce the problem to something you can punch in. The difference is that you can enter the problem in at an earlier stage in a TI-89 than in a TI-83.

i took PSAT as a freshman and got like...i think 198? on the real one. on this last one (am a junior) i got 225. And i did nothing, plus i was sick the weekend of the PSAT. As you get older and take more classes, your mind will just develop and you'll get more used to the material, more intelligent just cuz of that. I wouldn't even stress about it. If you really are, then do it the summer before junior year. No use worrying about it now.
