1930 SAT, ~3.0 GPA, low income, NY state resident...

I'm retaking the SAT in October and hope to improve my score to at least a 2000, but, for this, assume that I don't. I'd like to go to a doctorate-granting research university, because going into academia is my (unrealistic? I'm not sure.) dream. I'm going into senior year. I realize my GPA is very low. My family - two people - makes around $15000 a year and is on public assistance.

I'd appreciate it if you could chance me for, and, if possible, give financial aid information about...

Stony Brook
Stony Brook EOP
U at Buffalo
U at Buffalo EOP
CCNY
Hunter College
Fordham
Syracuse University
Clark University
University of Toronto
McGill University
Iowa State
CU Boulder

I'm also curious as to what you think would be a close fit for someone with my stats.

Any and all advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Bump… very interested in EOP/HEOP programs… seems like that would be helpful, given that my family has almost no money to contribute to college.

I don’t have great qualifications to chance you, but from what I know, I think that you have a decent or good shot at stony brook or ccny. I’m also in NY and I am quite familiar with both schools! Good luck!

I can tell you you will most likely get into CU- Boulder, the tuition for OOS students is expensive though.

You have good chances at CUNY also.

That’s it? I’d really hope that with decent SAT scores, I’d be able to get into something a bit better than CUNY. Ack.

Try SUNY Buffalo and look into Daniel Ackers program.

Try Toronto or McGill. Both are great from what I hear, and since they are in Canada, tuition is usually lower than US schools

I’m from the City so I believe I’ll share my opinion.
Stony and UB are within reach. You’re probably in at the CUNYs. Fordham and Syracuse are probably reaches. So are McGill and UT. EOP is kind of a crapshoot but you qualify. Your GPA is what’s killing you!

You might also want to look into New Paltz and St. John’s. St. John’s is expensive, but everyone gets in and they offer “decent” financial aid.

Thank you for the insight. :)

SB and UB are probably the options I’m most serious about. If I can get into either of those, I’d feel like the application process would be a success.

My GPA is pretty bad, yeah… I’m counting on doing better in college. For most of first three years of high school, I’d been going through a really bad depressive phase, which I’ve been putting a lot of effort into beating. My test and quiz grades kept me somewhat afloat throughout the entire process, but classwork and homework were a problem. Assuming my GPA improves in my first two/four years of college, I’d probably attempt to transfer. I worry about whether or not transferring from a CUNY would be viable - I hear a lot of bad things about CUNY schools.

What do you mean, about the EOP, though? Is there a significant difference between attending a university as a regular student as opposed to an EOP student? Is it possible to leave the EOP program with a high GPA?

bump for info

You should look into Penn State and your GPA is just a little but low even fir the typical late bloomer and/or lazy student. Boulder seems like a good option.

I don’t think it’s laziness, personally… I’ve had very bad mental issues throughout high school, and it was just difficult for me to get anything - especially group work - done. I’m not going to make excuses for that on my application, though.

The biggest problem with Boulder, for me, is that I’m an out of state student, and I don’t know if aid would be good enough.
