1st enquiry to universities

i am an international gap year student, applying to the states for fall 2009 semester. i know it's kinda late.
i wanted to first check in the colleges that i am applying to whether they are looking for students like me, and how much they would consider granting admission.
i am applying for financial aid, and i haven't contacted any college yet.
my question for this thread is - what do u ask the colleges in your first enquiry. i know many colleges ask students to send a rough detail of their accomplishments and grades and receive feedback. should i send a rough resume of mine to colleges? and then ask them whether i have any possibilities of getting substantial scholarship, and ask them whether it is worth the while to apply to the college or not? that way - i will also save money by not applying to colleges that have no interest in me, and also have a narrowed list.
do all or many students do this?
thanks a lot for answers. appreciate it!!

hi i would like to tell you that for inquiry regarding scholarship or funding you can either contact the international admission or you contact the respective professors. The International Admission office are looking for Good GRE scores and Good GPA. While professors need students who are willing to work for their research so you should be very specific in your interests.(usdreamz.com)
