1st gen?

Am i first generation college student if one of my parents did not go to college; however, the other graduated with a degree.

No, you are not.

Really, now, that’s just a silly question. If one of your parents has a college degree, how could you possibly be the first generation in your family to go to college?

The following is from another thread regarding first generation students:

“It depends on the school you’re applying to as there are two commonly used definitions of first gen college. One is what disasterous has stated, parent(s) attended some college, but did not obtain a degree. The other is that neither parent has enrolled in education past HS”

^In both of those examples neither parent earned a college degree, that’s why there’s the possibility that the student might be first gen depending on the definition used by the college.

In your case, one parent did earn a degree, so under no first gen definition would you qualify.

Oh, come now. Neither of those possibilities is what you described: “graduated with a degree.”

But the meaning of “first generation” is nothing you need to concern yourself with. It’s not as if there’s a box on the Common App that says, “Check here if you’re ‘first generation.’”

The Common App includes a section for information about your parents: their names, addresses and occupations; the highest level of education they attained; the names of their colleges and graduate or professional schools, if any. You’ll fill that out. Then the colleges that care whether an applicant is “first generation” (not all colleges care, and very few, if any, care very much) will decide whether you meet the criteria they use for being “first generation.”
