Can being a 1st generation college student help to get scholarships or f. aid?

yes.. It helps sooooooooooo much.

My son was awarded one of the Mercedes-Benz USA: Drive Your Future Scholarship which is based partly on being a 1st generation college student. It is $2,500 a year renewable. The deadline for this year has passed but if you are not attending college this fall, then you should apply.

If my dad never graduated from high school and my mom only has an ssociates degree from some college in Inida am I first generation since no one has one to an american college or earned a bachelor's degree?

it will depend on the school collegehopful
In my daughters case, she didn't receive any money for being first gen, but I believe she did receive a "tip" for admission

if ur thinking about UNC chapel hill, apply for the pogue!! full ride

It was an ok school that my mom went to. Wait so am I considered first generation or not?

You'd have to be the FIRST to go to college in your family. Sorry, I don't think that counts if your mom has :( I believe international schools still count. This is at least how I've percieved the phrase "first generation." You can double check.

Definitions differ. The Federal Government for the purpose of Student Support Services Programs defines first gen as neither parent graduated from a four year college.

I know that being first-gen helps, but I was wondering how current income factors in. Neither of my parents went to college, but we do have a solid middle to lower-middle class income. Or is this something that has to be taken into consideration on an individual basis?

Yes, I as mentioned above- my D didn't recieve scholarship money for being first gen- but I believe that being first gen- did play a part into being accepted to her reach school.

I am appreciative that she entered 6 years ago however, when 71% of the self selected group of freshmen were accepted , compare that to this falls entering class.
31% were accepted..
