1st generation

I am a 1st generation Korean American in the United States. How much help will my 1st generation status help me in the college admission process? (father did not complete high school, but my mother did). I am currently looking into UC’s, USC, and maybe Stanford

Well, your first generation status will definitly help you out. Not as much as legacy or AA, but it will give you an edge in the college process. uh UC's, USC, and Stanford huh. 1st gen. should give you a pretty good shot if you have above their averages

First generation works as a decent tip factor if you couple it with low income and a bad high school. If your parents have done well and you live in a middle class zip code and go to a decent high school with the full slate of APs etc., it will make little difference.

What if parents have CRAP jobs but they do investing, and we are middle-high income??

but I am first gen. parents didnt even finish high school.

in other words, everyone says that "1st gen usually = low income = help you out."

what about 1st gen but middle-high income, GREAT high school, many opportunities.......How much advantage?

Not much if any.

^ hm...always thought 1st generation gave an edge over reg. applicants

i was first generation, and i saw my parents go through hell to make it here. At the time I applied, my family was somewhat wealthy and I went to a decent H.S. (2 H, 4 Y, 3 MIT, 2 S, 10+ Browns, 10+ Penns, TONS to UCB and UCLA). But my experience with my family through poverty was what made the difference for me. First gen all totally depends on what you went through as a result of being first generation, not just the fact that you are first generation college student. I was accepted into some pretty good universities with average-above average stats to those schools (accepted to HYPM, attending H).

I totally agree. First generation isn't going to make a difference if your parents made out all right, like mine (Middle class, asian science geeks). They're really not going to care if your parents have completely no idea on how to guide you through the college app process. They've probably read so many essays on the battle between cultural differences that they won't care about that either unless you make yours special. It really is all about what happened as a first generation, like if you had to work extra hard because you had to spend half of your time talking in English to customers at your parents' store because your parents can't speak English...of course, that is an extreme situation there.
