1st post and 1st chance

Hi! We're new to the board and new to the college search so I am anxious to get some feedback. My S is a junior with a 3.7 unweighted gpa at a catholic school in the dc area. 1 AP course this year, 3 more sr. year...many honors courses throughout HS. SATs are 730 CR, 560 M and 710 W. He is retaking this spring and feels he can pull his math up to 650. His main activities include editor of the school paper, 2 yrs. debate team (11,12) lacrosse (9, 10) track (11, 12) latin club 4 yrs. Has worked the last 2 summers 25 hrs/wk. Plays drums in metal band (they even perform locally and write their songs!) Community service may be weak -- mostly stuff required through school totaling 100 hours throughout hs. He's primarily interested in liberal arts (english/econ) or maybe business. What do you think about his chances at the following:

Richmond
Bucknell
Dickinson
Loyola
Fordham
Villanova
BC
Wake Forest
Holy Cross
Furman
Colgate

Would love to hear any feedback including what areas he needs to beef up!

definitely needs to beef up SAT scores and GPA. Take as many AP courses as possible. forget about everything else.

Richmond - borderline in
Bucknell - borderline in
Dickinson - ??
Loyola - ??
Fordham - borderline in
Villanova - ??
BC - out
Wake Forest - borderline out
Holy Cross - borderline out
Furman - borderline in
Colgate - borderline in

I’m not an expert so dont get discouraged. I think he’s right on the edge (in or out). It will depend on the number of applicants and qualifications for the year.

Holy Cross is SAT Optional. I think he has a great chance there especially coming from a Catholic high school.

Just looking for anyfeedback on these schools. Thx!

William and Mary has been referred to as a Public Ivy. If you’re not from VA there may be in-state quotas making OOS hard. Except for knowing that they exist dont know too much abt the others. Providence has a great basketball team

I agree, W&M is as competitive OOS as an Ivy, in the sense of how hard it is to get in. W&M has definitely been called a public Ivy (although it receives few state funds), and it is a quality education.

I even believe that it has gained tremendous popularity recently, and is located in a wonderful area…colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country, outlet shopping malls, and great restaurants all close by.

I am not sure about your stats, what are they?

To Bucco: My D, with similar stats, applied or looked at most of these. She got into Bucknell and is going. However, I know kids with better stats that were denied or waitlisted at Bucknell – the small number of acceptances at good LACs make them difficult to predict so be sure that he visits these schools and interviews at the schools that do intereviews as that is really important to the process. My D was waitlisted at BC, but frankly many friends with better stats were denied there, so I think that is the toughest nut to crack on your list. I think Villanova and HC are matches, and Fordlam likely. I think he has a shot at WF too. I don’t know about the others. Your son will land someplace good with those stats. Don’t be discouraged.

Thanks Pickwick - I appreciate the tip on interviews!

and ps - most schools don’t interview, but I think all or most of the schools on your list (except NOT BC) keep track of when you visit, your emails to them etc. which all show “interest” (an important factor for LACs in particular). Holy Cross does that and does interviews all over the country so if you don’t sign up, that is probably going to be seen as an indication of lack of interest HC.

BC will be the toughest, but your son has good stats and will have some nice choices. Best of luck!
