1st quarter at a UC but want to attend CSU instead

I have a past student who is in her first year at UCR. Due to finances and personal matters, she would like to attend CSULB or CSUDH instead (it is closer to home and a lot cheaper to attend and not dorm). What should she do? Does she withdraw from UCR and apply to CSULB as a freshman? Or, is there a way she can transfer? Who should we contact to get more information? She was admitted to CSULB and CSUDH last year while she was a senior in HS.

Any guidance would be tremendously appreciated!

Does she have a UCR transcript? Any college courses taken post HS graduation makes her a transfer applicant.

CSU’s only accept Junior level transfers so 60 semester/90 quarter units. If she wants to attend a CSU, her best course of action would be to start at a community college and then transfer.

The CSU application is due tomorrow, so I do not think there is time to even apply at this point.

Any local community college will have a transfer advisor that is knowledgeable about CSU transfers.

Thank you! She is considering doing an academic withdrawal from UCR before December 2nd, therefore not having any completed post-HS college credit. Since she applied last year, I believe most of her CSU application is already completed.

If she gets the academic withdrawl, then she should be eligible to apply as a Freshman but would have to include her Senior year HS grades.
Essentially she will be taking a Gap year until Fall 2017?

Ok. This is what I understood as well. I will let her know. And yes, I believe it would be a “gap” year until next fall. Would she have to at any point state that she attended UCR?

I think that she should ask the UCR advisor tomorrow or contact CSU admissions directly if she needs to state anywhere on her application that she did attend UCR. Not sure if an official transcript will be generated for the withdrawal since then this might void her eligibility to apply as a Freshman even if no grades are on the transcript. Sorry that I cannot be more help.

Will do! Thank you so much! You have been incredibly helpful!

They may also consider a true hardship - talk to the admissions folks at CSUDH and see what accommodations they can make.
