This is my first semester in college at Cal. In May i had to pick between UCLA and Cal. the hardest decision of my life, i even turned in two SIR's to give myself more time, chose cal b/c it's the "better school", but doing that just made me realize that I really loved EVERYTHING about UCLA and its really my dreamschool. I applied for an appeal after i made that decision and, not to my surprise, it was turned down. So now my entire life is geared at correcting the mistake i made.

I'm undeclared and i'm kinda looking at transferring into some of UCLA's impacted majors, so I really don't have much flexibility if i switch.
will it really help my chances if i wait till i'm a sophomore at cal before i apply? I have lots of credits from High school, so getting units isn't a problem, its fulfilling the prereq's for the impacted majors that's the problem. (b/c i've only had a semester of college and obviously I haven't completed those specific requirements.)

Would you consider leaving UCB after this semester and going to your local ccc? Applying as a community college student is the best way to increase your change at getting in. If your ccc offers a TAG agreement with UCLA, that's even better. It's definitely possible to transfer from UCB to UCLA but UCLA is going to give preference to kids who aren't already at a four year school.

Also, UCLA only offers junior level transfer. Since you will have already completed a semester of college you must have at least 60 semester units or 90 quarter units by the time you enter UCLA. So if you stay at Berkeley you will probably need to be there until the end of your sophomore year to accumulate those 60 credits.

And I second youramonkey1441, is there any specific you don't like about UCB?

Oh, you want to leave because you want the SoCal experience? I'm in UCI right now, and it's nothing special. My cousin's at UCLA, and it looks pretty nice. I guess if smog is your thing, go for it. I'd personally choose Berkeley because my family is around the Bay Area, but if you want to get away from family stuff for awhile, definitely go to UCLA.

You're at an advantage because you were actually accepted to UCLA out of high school. Definitely apply for a sophomore transfer and see what happens. If you get turned down, you could always give it another shot for junior-level transfer.

But yeah, I'd have to agree with everyone else here that your best chance at UCLA is probably the CCC route, because you're definitely gonna have a harder time getting a 3.7 at Cal than a 3.7 at a community college.

agree, go to ccc may increase your chance, but you should double check with the admission stuff cause u will have transferable unit from Cal, I don't know if UCLA will treat u as a genuine CCC student. But if you are not really that hate Ber, I think you should stay there, and see what happen after 2 years, you may change your decision, who know!

yes i want to be at ucla b/c of the "socal experience", i'm from norcal... and cal is fine, i'm just scared about how this weather is gonna work out, and it just doesn't seem as exciting as exploring socal.

two things:
1- so units are not the issue, i have enough, its the prereq's for capped majors that i don't yet have, and i don't even know WHICH major i want (all my options happen to be capped ones though) so I don't think i should apply, but maybe it would be better to apply now b/c its closer to when i applied as a highschool student....?
2- I know my GPA is gonna suffer here at cal as opposed to a ccc, but i don't want to go to a ccc in case i apply for transfer and then don't get in to ucla. then i would've turned down one uc for ccc, and that's not really a route i was considering.

You should check this link out, just for reference: UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students
You can find the admission rates of students transferring from Cal to UCLA. Recently the numbers have been between ~25% to ~45% which is pretty good.

I think the main question is whether you will be okay with not getting into UCLA if you stay at Cal because you will then be stuck at Cal until you graduate. Personally I think that if you could get into Cal as a freshman you can get into UCLA as a transfer student from a ccc. I don't know where you are in norcal but there are a few cccs up there that offer TAGs. If you keep your grades up and have a TAG you're golden for UCLA.

Also it's my understanding (could be wrong) that if you don't have the prereqs done for your major you won't be admitted.
