1st semster schedule ...is this crazy?

My son is at orientation right now and just meet with his academic adviser in LSA.. Went in as undecided maybe going to transfer to Engineering..
Math 215
Chem 201/211
ENGR 101
ENG 125

Seems like way too much for an incoming Freshman... any thoughts of what changes he could make?

Thanks...

Tell us about his background. Engr. 101 is very easy if you have been exposed to programming before. It can be very difficult if you haven’t.

Is he good at math? 215 is not a hard class overall, but it reputed to have a tough curve.

I’ll let others speak to Eng 125 and Chem 201, since I haven’t taken those courses.

Sorry, its Chem 210 not 201 Orgo Chem
He took AP Computer Science in high school AP CALC and AP CHEM. (but does not have AP scored back but figures a very good score)
Scored a 96% in Chem Placement… 100% Math placement. Adviser told him he should start at Math 215… but with Chem 210 Orgo he was thinking of taking Math 116 instead of Math 215 to make it a little easier on him…

Doesn’t look horrible if you have prior knowledge of 2/3 of chem, math and programming.

Math 116 is not worth taking with AP credit. The curve is difficult and its the most failed class at UofM (or so goes the rumor with ENGR students).

But if he’s transferring to ENGR, then why enroll for first year writing?

What about Calc II vs. Applied Calc II? Which one in general is considered the easier class?

GoGiantsfan, I answered you in PM.

It will transfer as Engr100.

Thanks Vladenschlutte for PM… What about moving Math 215 to Math 156 which is I think Cal 2 honors… its the only Math that fits into schedule… Any thoughts on that Math class?

I don’t see any point in taking Calc 2 again. If he cannot get into Calc 3 then he should just take something else and take Calc 3 next semester. A year from now, he’s not going to remember more from Calc 2 than he already knows if he got a 5 on the BC test.

thats right… if he gets a 5 on BC … he gets 8 credits and gets out of 115 and 116. I dont think 215 fit or if it did it was with a bad professor… I will have him look again… Thanks

May I suggest 216 if 215 doesn’t fit in ; I was originally going to take 285, but it didn’t fit either. 216 has a decent curve, and Fornaess is a beast if you can get him.

No that doesnt look bad at all, in fact it looks like a somewhat regular engineering schedule.

Dont redo Calc 2. No reason to and it will probably hurt his GPA.

If he took AP Comp Sci in HS then he’ll be fine ib 101. He could take 151 if he wants. I did and I learned a ton.

What would help is knowing what kind of engineering he wants to go into.

just a warning, CoE is trying to make it so that English 125 doesn’t transfer as ENGR 100. I don’t know when the change is going to take place – probably not this year – but you should still have your son check with the EAC if he’s serious about transferring to CoE.

I’m going to jump in here and ask a related question: my son took AP calc AB in high school and got a very easy A in the class and scored a 5 on the test (also 800 on the SAT math 2 and 36 on ACT - not bragging, just saying he’s all about math!). We’re thinking he should take math 116, but after these comments about the course, I’m not so sure! He doesn’t really have any other option, does he? I think it would be a waste for him to take 115… please advise!

^ he certainly has the potential to do well. If he tries his best, he should be fine. It’s graded on a curve anyway. From the description, he probably will be on the right side of the curve, provided that he put the effort in. :)

He won’t need English 125 if he transfers to Engineering. He could take that second semester if he stays in LSA. The chemistry is the most difficult. If he is good at math and Chemistry the schedule sounds OK

Thanks for all the advice… He is going to go with that schedule… maybe look into Math 216 if it works out better… Also, he does not English 125… in order to do a cross campus transfer there is a list of classes he must have taken and that is one of them…

Nvr retake a math class if you dont have to.

And GoGgiants, what engineering is your son interested in? Does he know yet?

So, is Math 116 the logical starting point for my son, having taken Calc AB in high school? There isn’t any other choice, correct?

Yes. If you tested out of Calc 1, then go into Calc 2
