1st Year Engineering and Dual Enrollment

High school senior is considering Iowa State for engineering. Some questions—

  • We can’t tell if you’re directly admitted into your major or need to appy after 1st year. We’re seeing info on “Basic Program” but not sure if you then apply.
  • Is is easy to switch between the engineering degrees? Easy as in easy to get admin support/ there’s room, not easy as in do I possibly need to take a bunch of extra class. (One of the schools we’ve looked at you, for example, can’t switch into Mechanical Engineering if you didn’t choose it when you applied to the school )
  • Are they generous in accepting Dual enrollment classes?
  • If, for example, a student is coming in dual enrollment English 2, Differential Equations, Chem 2, and Physics 2 can a student then also start taking some of the engineering specific classes? Like help me understand the Engineering “Basic Program”?
  • Extra points for someone that can talk about Mechanical or Materials engineering…

Thanks

Did you already check transferology? Iowa State is on there. I tried to tell if they were “generous“ using my son’s community college classes from Massachusetts, but none of them have been checked before. Maybe more people from your area go to Iowa State, though, and you will get a better read on whether they will take his classes

My S22 is an Industrial Engineering sophomore at Iowa State. You are directly admitted to the program of your choice. If you are unsure, you can go in undecided as my son’s roommate did. He ended up choosing Mechanical Engineering.

You don’t have to repeat DE classes. I think they explicitly state what they take. Transfer Credit - Iowa State University
