1st year private wealth management internship during academic year

Hey all,

I was wondering how one might be able to secure a PWM internship during the academic year (so like working once or twice a week) as a first year student (are there any websites listing such information?/do i have to cold call?/etc).

I already have a business-related internship under my belt, and I have another PWM internship this summer from a semi-prestigious bank (got it through family connections).

thanks in advance.

I think you’d be better off not doing it at all, since you will already have had PWM experience by then and adjusting to college is very, very important. That being said, I don’t think you’d have any trouble getting the PWM internship. Just use the alumni directory and email or call alumni who are working in PWM. Financial advisors basically hire interns at their own discretion, and I’m sure plenty of Chicago alumni work in Chicago PWM.

Thanks, I guess I will see how my internship goes this summer. I might actually enjoy doing PWM work more than ibanking – but we’ll see. Thanks for the answer.

actually one more question: how do we access the alumni directory?

Please don’t go internship crazy. You have so much time as a first year, it’s time to enjoy it. I did two academic year internships this year, one in PWM, and I regret it. Your resume is not going to look better with 5 internships compared to 2 solid ones.

To be fair, PWM interns from 1st and 2nd years are the people who get sophomore summer roles with actual banks in NY, which in turn lead to the best roles the summer before graduation. So while I would discourage doing it as well, there is the point to consider that PWM is sadly a conduit to getting “one or two solid” internships later on. (Disclaimer: the street’s total disrespect for academia is kind of sad, but there are a lot of managing director, pulled-myself-up-by-my-own-bootstraps types who are obsessive about work mundane work experience). On net, I would wait until the spring quarter or summer to try it.
