2.1 GPA (any input is appreciated so SAY SOMETHING)

I slacked off and let personal problems get in the way of my grades during my freshmen and sophomore year and ended up with a 2.1 GPA. I am now in my junior year and have maintained a GPA that is around 3.3-3.4 but the only “high-level” classes I’m taking are CP English 11 and Adv. Spanish 4.

I only have A’s and B’s and have left behind my bad habits but even though my counselor said he will write me a letter of recommendation for Penn State, I’m afraid I have no chance

Additional Information:
-I am going to have AP and advanced classes on my transcript
-I am bilingual
-My dad works for the university
-Most students in my school get into Penn State regardless of their GPA, I know people who have gotten in with a 2.3 (lower than what I will likely end up with at the end of my junior year (senior too)
-The recommended GPA for Penn State is a 3.0
-I am involved in school clubs and contribute to the community by volunteering at places

Main campus is extremely unlikely. I am not sure about the branch campuses.

Your essays will be the key. You have an upward trend in your grades which is a good thing, but you will have to explain the moment(s) when you decided to change your study habits and take your education seriously. If Penn State is your dream school then tell them that AND, more importantly, why you love it. Be specific about the things that you like about Penn State - the programs, the courses, campus organizations you’d join, everything.

Penn State barely looks at essays. They’re not required and GPA is 2/3 of the decision.

You will probably end up at a branch campus, OP.
