I have a 2.1 GPA. I messed up in fresh/soph year. I did decent junior year. My GPA is pretty much a 73% which is a 2.1. I got 1850 on my SAT.

I have done over 200+ hours volunteer work at local hospital and I have 150 hours at church. I am in 6 clubs. I have 4 letters of recommendations from teachers and 3 from doctors that I have worked with. One doctor is top 5% cardiologist in USA. I was very close to my grandparents who used to live with me and help me with my studies....freshman year my grandmother died and I was affected by her passing. Sophomore year my grandfather died and once again it really affected me.

My counselor told me not to even bother applying since I got kicked off from the computers freshman year because of a dumb prank....and I got ISS freshman year for walking off campus 5 min early.

I am looking at colleges in NY/NJ. Can you guys suggest me some colleges that would accept me?

I was thinking, Pace, Montclair State....need some more!

Well, what was your gpa junior year? And which state do you live in? NY or NJ?

I am in NY. My GPA junior year was around a 3.5ish. Schools in CT are also fine!

Is money an issue? Can you afford to go private w/o financial aid?

If so, I’m thinking Fairleigh Dickenson, Ryder, Drew in NJ.

Iona, St Bonaventure, CUNY Staten Island in NY.

Hartwick in Conn.

A little further away: U Maine, UNH, Penn State (not main campus but others)

I’d look at Hofstra University, in Hempstead, which is 25 miles east of NYC (but they allow freshman to have cars on campus, and transportation is available if you want to get to NYC). Hofstra would probably take you… You fall in line with the admitted applicant stats there. You’re current SAT puts you in the top quartile of their admitted applicants, and they accept GPAs all across the board, so you still have a shot. Your ECs are overkill for lower-ranked schools, so no worries there!(: You might even get some merit money for your high SAT score, I hear they’re pretty generous with aid. It’s a nice size (just under 7500 students), has a nice campus, a good student to faculty ratio, and it’s pretty diverse. Hofstra also has good academics (as reviewed by students), especially in the way of the professors themselves. Programs in business and education are pretty strong, if that interests you. Hofstra also just built a new med school, and already has a law school. For some reason, it seems to me that Hofstra has more prestige than it really should haha, which is good, if you go there(: I think Hofstra should definitely be on your radar, as you have a strong chance there and it’s in the right area.
You might wanna’ look into some CUNYs too.
Good luck!(:

Chance me everyone?(:

Well, why don’t you try some CUNY and SUNY schools?
Baruch? 7% have a gpa of 2.0-2.5…
Brooklyn maybe? 1%.
College of staten island? 20%
Hunter? 5%
Any of those. :)

Plus, apply to some SUNY’s as well. :)

Good luck. :)

why don’t you go to community college for two years and get your AA?

Correction- Hartwick is in NY in Oneonta- a nice college town.

@schmohawk: he doesn’t have much of a chance at penn state with his gpa. He doesn’t even hit the yellow on the bubble chart.

Really? I know not University Park, but even the non- main campuses? I thought they were much more lenient. Sorry.

Yeah man go to a community college and work hard in there to be transferred to a state school or better college is your best bet. Your guidance counselor is horrible btw not to tell you what I just told you.

So are your antics from freshman year going to be mentioned in your transcript? I hope not, if there have been no incidents since. Your GC is not on your team if all this is going to be put out there without sticking up for you in his recommendation.

I think with your upward trend and 1850 SAT, there are 4 year colleges that will admit you.
I get that living at home for 2 more years is not what you want to do, and who can blame you? It’s time to go to college.

I’d also suggest Pace and St. John’s, in addition to Hofstra, SUNYs, and CUNYs.
