I want to know if I add two recommendations to be considered by Chicago, will it be overkill? I don't want to overdo it because it might backfire, but these two recommendations will REALLY help demonstrate my interest in the major that I applied for at Chicago (IR). Thanks!

It can not hurt you to send these and, imo, can only help your cause. The odds are stacked against you but it is worth a shot anyway.

Alright thanks. Yeah, I really don’t want to get my hopes up, but I’m hoping I can get lucky just this once!

The UChicago website specifically advises people against sending in additional recommendations.

JSnoopy, yes, this is overkill. The best you can do is send in a letter of interest or an e-mail indicating your continued interest to your regional counselor, but it’s highly unlikely that additional rec letters will be read (and unfair to ask your recommenders to write and organize them given this).

@ ghost, thats not true.

It says specifically on the website-

“You may submit supporting materials for music, theater and dance, or visual arts and film. You may also submit an additional recommendation from anyone who knows you well (e.g., coach, music or foreign language teacher, member of your community).”

Check it if you dont believe me: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/firstyear/#application

(Scroll down to the bottom)

As for gracello, i would say you should send in an additional recommendation, and send a letter of interest.

@AlexandraD, those are options for your initial application-- yes, you are welcome to send in additional letters when you first apply. However, additional information for a waitlist applicant is not necessary. Here is information from the Admissions Office blog to that effect:

Waitlist: This means that we do not have room at this time to offer you a place in the incoming class. However, if UChicago remains your first choice school, you should accept your place on the waitlist via your UChicago Account.

A few reminders:

You should accept a place at a school to which you were admitted by May 1. It is possible we won’t know whether or not we can make offers of admission to applicants on the waiting list until early May, and we don’t want you to run the risk of not having a seat anywhere next fall.

Our waiting list is unranked, so we cannot tell you “where you are” on the list. As to how many people we take off the waiting list… well, that varies from year to year. Some years we are able to take a number of students from the waiting list, and other years we cannot. We know this is frustratingly vague, but it’s the truth.

You do not need to send us an updated resume or recommendation letter. If you feel especially passionate about UChicago, you might consider a brief email for your Admissions Counselor to that effect.

We do not encourage waitlisted students to visit campus. This is for several reasons. First, we do not schedule interviews with waitlisted students, and there is nothing we would tell you in person that we could not also tell you over e-mail or over the phone. Second, we want you to spend your time and resources visiting schools to which you were admitted. And third, frankly, visiting campus as a waitlisted student can be awkward for you and your parents.

Finally, you didn’t do anything wrong. What we did wrong was build a College that can only house an incoming class of about 1,350. The Life of the Mind lives on wherever there are those to carry the banner-- Remain passionate about learning and college will be an incredible experience.

These are supplemental materials that we were welcome to submit with our initial applications. At this stage of the application process, we are no longer advised to do so. Here.

Sorry.

Yeah, it seems to be the case. I might just send one…but yeah the letter of interest is more important I guess.

Do whatever ‘you think’ might help your case. It is important to remember this is the waitlist, do not keep your hopes up too high and you will come out of this okay.

The College should do away with this waitlist. It is unfair to put the kids through this emotional limbo for another month.

Good luck!

Thank you! It’s hard, but I’m trying to keep things into perspective. It sucks because Chicago’s waitlist is going to last until June I think.
