2 Ds and a C... will any college accept me?

Please help me! I am freaking out because I have a D in AP Calc and AP Psych right now, and I am mortally afraid that I will be rejected from all of my colleges. The only A I have right now is in Chinese I, I have Bs in AP Stats and AP Eng, and a C in AP Bio... I am trying very hard to get my grades up right now, but I'm not sure if I can get them high enough by the time the quarter ends (Oct 31st).

Here are my test scores and GPA so far:

GPA - 3.9 (cumulative for last 3 years)
SAT - 2100 (650 CR/740 M/710 W)
ACT - 31

I took the SAT again on the 5th, and hopefully I will have increased my score by at least 50 points. Even with that though, will I still be able to get into any of these colleges?

BC
UC Berkeley
UNC Chapel Hill
Carnegie Mellon
UConn
Emory
U of IL-Urbana Champaign
MIT
Northeastern
Rensselaer
WPI

I am an Asian girl from CT. I don't have any great ECs or any other achievements... UConn and WPI were originally going to be my safeties but now I am not even sure I will get into those...

You are failing your senior classes?..

Take MIT off…

Go talk to the teachers your failing in, make sure you do it during your own time, maybe even work up some tears, explain your situation how you want to go to these schools and you really need to pass there class, ask what you can do to bring up your grades, extra credit etc.

Yes… will I still be able to get into any of these colleges??

I think UIUC should be a good match

Could you get in? Sure, but as with almost any school nothing is a sure thing, there is a certain element of luck required. I’d say most of those schools are possible even likely, but, especially with this semesters grades, it might be slightly less likely. And expect rejections, it’s a numbers game and if you get unlucky you can rejected.

Also on an application there is usual a spot for a personal statement or additional information, you could always write something there. Did something massive happen in your life that made you get behind? Traumatic events, illness (mental or otherwise), family problems, overload work schedule, etc.

Also if they have early action (non-binding), I know UNC does, you could try for that, they won’t see your 1st quarter grades.

On the flip side wait, do exceptional 2nd quarter to prove that it was fluke and you really can do well.

Tell us why you are failing those classes. Are they challenging? Are you just being lazy and not studying for their quizzes/tests? Are you having family issues?

UICI look good though
Also you can always apply early action so they wouldn’t need to see your semester grades

AP bio and others often start out with difficult material and tests. Calm down, you have time to turn things around, since you have been a very strong student.

Go talk to each professor and arrange for extra help. Go to all study sessions. For AP bio, the test prep books and flashcards you can get from PR and Barrons are very good.

Estimate 2 hrs of hard work per class per day, more on weekends. Cut out all unnecessary activities.

Agree with plan to apply early if possible, and put in some very safe safeties (open enrollment schools).

I have already applied EA to UNC-Chapel Hill and plan on applying EA to Northeastern, WPI, and MIT also. In my application to Chapel Hill, I did not mention anything about my circumstances. Are they worth mentioning, or will it look like I am just making excuses?

I’m not doing well in those classes because they are really challenging (for me). I asked my dad if he could find a tutor for me though so hopefully I will be able to understand the material better in the future (for AP Calc at least). Also, I my father is unemployed and my mother doesn’t support me financially so I got a job over the summer and am working there currently. I had an extremely hard time in the beginning of the school year juggling schoolwork and work so I asked for reduced hours, but even with less hours, I am still having a hard time completing all my homework. I don’t get a lot of sleep and I have narcolepsy so if I am even the least bit tired, I will fall asleep. This happens often in class, sadly, and also when I am in the middle of doing my homework, so most of the time it is either extremely rushed and not well done or just incomplete.

Sounds like you have your answer - you cannot handle 5APs, Chinese 1, and a job.

Quit the job. Friends will feed you.

Don’t hire a tutor, go to the teachers and to study sessions.

Consider dropping AP psych, dropping down a level in english, and why are you taking a new language now anyway?

Your best option may be community college for a year or two, then reapply to the universities on your list once your circumstances have stabilized.

There is medication for narcolepsy, by the way.

^ Agreed. You are overworking yourself. Drop courses that aren’t really related to your desired major, and colleges really won’t care. For example, engineering schools won’t care if you have taken AP English/History classes in your senior year. Go for extra help if you are struggling in those classes. You don’t need to learn a new language in school. Aren’t you bilingual already? You can ALWAYS learn a new language after graduating.

Drop your AP Calc class ~ to free up time to bring up your AP Psych, and to stay sane. You have a math already. You probably will do perfectly fine in Calc at another time (in college). Do not torture yourself, or risk it.
