I'm majoring in Industrial & Systems engineering. I just transferred as a junior and got my credit evaluation and I'm a semester behind. Now I have two options. I can take 17 credits my first semester and take 3 classes next summer and graduate in 2 years. The other option is I can take 14 this semester to become adjusted to the new school, take no summer classes, try to get an internship instead and have to go back an extra fall semester.

Any opinions or advice?

Thanks

I think the internship would benefit you much more than getting out a semester early.

Sign up for 17 credits but be prepared to drop a course if the workload is too high. If you find that you can handle 17 credits per semester, than you have the option of deciding summer session (leading to earlier graduation) or internship (later graduation but internship experience) later (especially since a decent internship is not guaranteed – if you cannot get one, you’ll have the option of taking the summer session and graduating earlier).

The other thing to consider is whether costs and financial aid may be a problem for an extra semester.

I agree with both of you. I was actually already considering that ucbaalumnus. Cost isn’t a factor because with financial aid the fall semester will cost roughly the same as the three summer courses. I would love to graduate on time if possible, but my concern was not having an engineering internship and I was dreading 10 credits over the summer with over an hour commute each way everyday. I have had several jobs since I was 13 though so I have plenty of working experience just none in engineering.

I guess for now my only problem is figuring out how to fit in one extra course since my schedule is kind of all over the place.

I actually don’t think taking 17 credits is even going to be possible with the schedule I have. I looked up every single course that would count towards my degree requirements, including electives and everyone overlaps with some other course I’m already taking.

I should have looked into this more before I posted. I found another course to take, but because of how the design classes are scheduled and all the prereqs I need it would be impossible to finish in 2 years. 2 1/2 it is! It’s probably for the best anyway.
