2 people aiming for cornell

If me and another kid are both applying early decision to cornell, and hes a lot smarter and has better stats than me

am i pretty much rejected? or can we both get in?

we are both applying to cals too

I think it depends on the quality of your school and how many kids your school can send to ivies/top schools each year. For example, if you go to a private or competitive public school, then you can definitely both get in given that you are qualified. However, if you go to a mediocre or parochial school, then sometimes Cornell may only be willing to take one person max. from the school. But, I would still apply b/c it ultimately comes down to top only the quality of your school, but also your own qualifications.

i go to a mediocre school ,like eveyrone in my school ends up going to the dumbest colleges on earth. liek the ones that have 100 percent acceptance rates

I’m worried about this issue too. My school isn’t terrible, pretty good academics but only sent two people to Ivy League last year (Cornell and Brown), which seemed like the best class that had graced the school in a long time.

I know how you guys feel b/c I go to a mediocre/slightly above average public that sends at most 3-4 people to top schools. But still, if you feel like you’re qualified and have good stats, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply to those top schools.

Unless you two are applying for the same exact program, you won’t even be considered to be in competition with one another.

i think what matters most is your high school profile stats…

like if you’re way above the avg for your high school

We’ve had two students get into CALS from the same class twice…for all 4 Cornell was a “reach” statswise.

This is going to be a biiig problem at my school this year. It feels like everyone wants to go to Cornell. And I think I have lost a friend over it too.

As said before, you’re not competing against your high school classmate unless they’re applying to the same college or in some cases, i.e., CALS, the same major.

Cornell doesn’t cap the number of people it will take from one high school. It only wants the best students and those who can demonstrate why Cornell is the right for them.

@NulliSecundus-
you lost a fRIEND over Cornell?
don’t be stupid. no college is worth that.

i can’t believe you guys are thinking about the other people in your school as competition. sheesh.
i didn’t know/care really about where my classmates were applying; that was their business.

just focus on your own app.
if you get accepted/rejected, it won’t be because of the other person who’s applied.

i would imagine it would be a problem at prep schools and the like…

^^ It wasn’t me, and there never was an argument. I think it’s stupid too. She just kind of stopped talking to me (and we were “talking” at the time too) even though we sat next to each other in three classes. Honestly, it’s the only reason I can imagine that she would do that. I know that she’s really competitive and I consistently got better grades than her with less effort. It’s stupid though because we’re not even applying to the same college (she’s doing CoE and I’m doing not engineering). I guess I should have said I THINK I lost a friend over it, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

^
sorry for getting all preachy& accusatory.
but yeah, people do weird/stupid things during app time…
i guess i should be fortunate that my friends didn’t give a damn :P

but there was a huge scandal in my year, and ended involving the school principal
and the threat of lawyers 0.0

Scandal? Haha what?
