2 Questions from an accepted student!

All right, I'm unbelievably excited right now and have to ask a couple questions...

-How big are the dorm rooms? Will I be able to fit a compact 88-key keyboard in the room? Dimensions are 52 1/16 x 10 15/16 x 5 3/16 in.

-What cell phone service works?

-Haha I hate to ask it but how good to my second semester grades have to be...

Thanks

1) Yes; typical dorm room for frosh = 200 sq. ft.
2) AT&T/Cingular/whatever it's called now. It's the only thing that works. While you're at it, consider getting an iPhone. Stanford runs on e-mail and it's really handy being able to check whenever without lugging a laptop around everywhere. There's supposedly a 3G version coming out, so wait for that if you plan on getting one.
3) Keep your grades reasonably close to what they are now. Slip in a few, (like, 2) the adcom might glaze over, but really, any more and you'll start having to worry about writing them letters of explanation and risking admission. It's not worth it. Party all you want in the summer, we start a month later than most schools because we're on the quarter system anyway.

Hope that answers things! Congrats on being accepted!!!

You say "2 Questions" then you ask 3. You represent accepted students well.

lol just kidding. =p

Congrats. I remember the feeling I had last year when I got accepted to Stanford (though RD, not EA).

As for the grades, don't get C's or below, though they won't rescind you, they will definitely send you a letter asking for an explanation. I'm sure you'll keep up the good work though.

I have 2 questions too.

Is the finaid offer negotiable?

AND.....

How hard are the engineering classes? Like what are they curved to?

thanks a lot guys...and i guess i kinda forgot to change the title after i wrote the 3rd question

Wait, only one cell phone service works?

1) Fin aid is sometimes negotiable. Some people get more when they try, some people don't. shrug It's rather variable.

2) most science & engineering classes are curved to ~B.

3) AT&T is the only one that works. Verizon works kinda sorta on East Campus, but sucks everywhere else. T-Mobile just sucks entirely. Sprint, I've heard people can sometimes use, but those are the people who pay the extra dough for use of phones through WiFi. Seriously, just get AT&T if at all possible, it's incredibly annoying when your friends can't reach you and vice versa.

Only AT&T works reliably.

Keep your grades up, and don't slack off. You'll need good study habits and work ethic if you want to be successful at Stanford and beyond -- so better start practicing those now.

"How hard are the engineering classes? Like what are they curved to?"

They are hard. Grades are curved, but there are too many smart people, so the curve isn't all that generous ;)...

But if you're smart and work hard, you'll be able to get at least a B- right?

And....

How's the food at Stanford? If you're in a certain dorm with its own dining hall can you eat at another dining hall if you have a meal plan (without paying for it with cash)?

^ the answer is "yes" to all of your questions (and the food is fine)

my last question

about SUNet IDs...I've noticed that lots of people have firstname.lastname@stanford.edu e-mail addresses. How would the web address work? would it be stanford.edu/~firstname.lastname ?

gracias

haha just one more Q i promise...what's on the admitted student website? is it worth making the sunet id now?

My phone is on Virgin Mobile, and that works just fine for me everywhere except for the basements of a couple of buildings. I think they use the Sprint network.

Dorm food's OK, though in some places it tends to be a little repetitive. You can eat at any dining hall with your meal plan.

If you work hard at a class, you will almost always be able to get a B- or better.

You can fit a compact keyboard in your room, though you'll have to rearrange things a bit if you don't want it in the middle of the floor. Lots of people do this. However, if you're one of the unlucky frosh living in Lag, you may want to reconsider as the rooms are much smaller there than normal rooms.
