2 Questions: Price and Safety

How much does McGill cost? I looked on their website and I couldn’t find it. I’ve heard it’s a bit more for U.S. students, anyone know how much? Also, about how much are apartments in the area around the campus (or close enough to the school)?

How safe is Montreal? Obviously, as it’s Canada, it’s pretty safe. But like, how safe? Can a group of people (or even alone) walk around at night and be safe? Like walking back from a bar or something. Same with the Subway, I assume it’s safe at night (like late night/early morning).

Any help is welcome, thanks.

I can answer the first question, but don't know about the second.

http://www.mcgill.ca/student-accounts/fees/

this page will take you to tuition and other fees. But I'm not quite sure about the price of housing.

I don't think housing - as in apartments - would cost much differently than the standard housing McGill offers Freshmen. But I could be wrong. As for safety, for a large urban city, Montreal strikes me as one of the safest. I mean, if you're a girl, I guess you might as well take extra precautions, but most of the crime in Montreal is probably theft more than anything else.

verbatim is the quote a guy from the McGill Summer Send-off told me, "*****, I never was worried going anywhere in Montreal. I took the subway at all hours, and never worried. It wasn't until I visited New York [city] and I walked into a subway where I was the only white-guy, that I began to worry."

Though I don't appreciate the (not so) subtle racism in the quote. You can take it for what it's worth (the opinion of one white male, during his stay at McGill in the '70's).

Yeah meshuggener, im pretty sure it is much cheaper to live in appartments. At least that is the impression i got when people on here said u can pretty easily find apartments for 500 a month (kinda away from campus though)
which basically totals to 4000 + plus living expenses+food and stuff. But that is still cheap when compared to 11k+ at New res

500 a month? Were they...livable? Or is housing in Montreal just hella cheap?

Whoah are u from california. Cuz i am. NorCal, right by sacramento...or do you just say hella just because?

I heard they are very liveable, but just not in the "ghetto" (right by campus...and no it isnt ghetto).

Usually people spend their first year in dorms, which is smart because then you can meet people easily (but can cost between 9k and 12k a year(btu usualyl includes a meal plan).

If i get in, thats what im gonna do. And then ill probably get an apartment for 500 or so, and hopefully get a roomate or somethin to split costs (which would be super cheap then).

The "ordinary" people I met in MTL raved about how safe the city was, even late at night. Speaking of theft- I was very surprised to see all the bikes outside the Metro at Mile End (north of McGill). Yes, they were locked, but they were all intact. Try that in any major US city- and you might be left with a spoke.
