Anyone know if Cornell uses essay scanning programs like Turnitin... If so, when do they do this (eg, they read an essay that seems eerily familar), cause it'd seem sort of impractical for them to scan for plagiarism all 20,000-ish applicant essays. Or is Turnitin just used for current Cornell students? I had never heard of this program before.

Those of you accepted last year (or ED this yr?),
Does it come via mail (ON april 1, or mailed on april 1) or is it an online decision ?

I sense a guilty conscience.

Wow…Turnitin sounds really interesting…I had never heard of it! Do schools actually use this, cuz it sounds like it could potentially violate personal material…(although you do sign your app. When you admit them…hmm)? hahaha…ps. it’s rather amusing that you should inquire about this lol. But I agree with the large volume of applicants it just doesn’t seem very efficient!

Long story largely involving my cousin.
Please do not ridicule me, my day has sucked enough.

About the second question though -- Are applicants notified via Internet (probably easier) or mail (probably more exciting)?

Yeah, when I was reading about Turnitin, one of the biggest controversies with it was that it was a violation of privacy because kids weren't agreeing to it... Mad kids sued because of it, because they didn't want their material to be subjected to it, especially without being notified.

Ya…that’s understandable I guess with personal stuff and things that haven’t been authorized …so they could argue that a person is guilty but can’t really do much about it….not sure with App. Since the applicant signs it!

I think you get the decision online first…then in the mail!

write something original so you can save time worrying.

my school (public hs in new jersey) uses turnitin.com. any essay or paper we do at home we have to submit to turnitin as well as to our teacher. you have to consent to it to submit it. the teachers (at least at my school) don't submit your work you do. i don't think it's ever really bothered me because I'm not into plaigarizing. and because i know how the process works and how long it takes to submit one paper, i don't think cornell would bother to submit everyone's. most of the time i bet they take your word for its uniqueness (that i have no authority on though).

Is it true that admissions decisions are posted online on April 1 before they're mailed ?
