All right I just have two general questions. First, can anyone tell me about the undergraduates econ major at CMU. Really appreciate it. Also, I've heard some stories that girls are CMU are in limited supply. To me, that doesnt seem that bad. Are odds as horrible as people say they are?

im gonna tell u straight up that yes u'll be facing a 2:1 guy to girl ratio. not TOO bad in the social scene since an equal amt of guys and girls come out to do stuff, especially since guys tend to scurry away into their rooms and play video games all day.
guys always complain about how girls arent that great and girls, imo, also do so, but to an even greater extent. people also tend to get an inflated ego at cmu if they are average+ looking (they think they are hot **** so to speak)

of course, everything that i said is my personal opinion and i could most definitely be wrong. everything is also dependent on the class and how cmu decides to do acceptances this year regarding m:f ratio.

as for your first question: i was an econ major, and i REALLY disliked it so i transferred to business, which many people tend to do. of course, there are also a good number of people who found a passion in the major and stuck to it even though they wanted to transfer to Tepper during their freshie year.

what was wrong with it?

There wasn't anything particularly wrong with it - it just wasn't my cup of tea. I've taken two econ classes so far and they were my only C's so far in college. Watch out for Klepper and his "kleppernomics" for principles of econ. He is a GREAT teacher but don't expect to get an A out of the class.
imo, business seems to be more practical. economics is more theoretical, with many more "what if" situations.

ive read some posts sayin how social life was great. i noticed that most of those who said this were in frats. is a frat the only guarantee for a fun social life?

CMU is weird in that a bunch of people join frats but don't live in the houses. The people I know who did that like it because there's someplace for them to go if they want to have fun, but otherwise they can get work done.

No, frats are not the only guarantee for a fun social life- I know plenty of people who aren't in frats and enjoy themselves here. I like the social life here and I'm not in a sorority, but then again, I'm not the type that considers parties and drinking much fun.

For guys, if you want to pursue social life, getting into frat is the best bet. CMU frats aren't like what most of state universities frats are like...I think. If you want to focus on academics, make friends that are in frat, which is what I do. Fortunately, 1/3 of my floor is in one of the frats, and most of the friends I hang out (in CS) are in frats too. I'm having tons of fun here. Girls are okay - if you know where to find them.

Kleppernomics wasn't that bad...I had NEVER taken econ class in my life before, and got an A in this class. All of my friends came out with mostly A's, or at least a B. You should take this course if you are majoring in econ/ or good at math, but make sure you spend lots of time into it.
