I have 2 questions about identifying errors.

1) Five years in the writing, her new book is both a response to her critics' mistrust of her earlier findings and an elaboration of her original thesis.

Is "in the writing" correct ? If so, what is the point of using "the" ? Why not use "in writing"

2)Despite its cultural importance, the Daily Gazette lost 70 percent of its subscribers since 1920 and, by 1955, was losing as much as $200,000 a year.

Is there something wrong with "lost" or "was losing" ? I think they're right @

"in the writing" is a colloquial clause that means it took her five years to write. "Five years in writing, her new book . . ." is awkward.
