What if teen changes his major? Are either of the 6-y UG/med programs places where he would be content? If so, seems like a nobrainer

One of our doctors, who is finishing his residency at Johns Hopkins, shed some light recently on the whole medical school, undergraduate conversation. He went to a smaller VA state school for undergrad, U. Maryland (in-state) for med school, and Hopkins for residency. One day he also said, “Hey, I only got a 1200 on my SATs and look where I am.”

Another Hopkins doc told me years ago that she would not have considered medical school at any university outside her home state because her loans would have been too big.

It is difficult when you are 17 or 18 to think that the bigger the name, the better the education and preparation. But it all comes down to individual commitment and work. Best wishes on all of your decisions.

6 year med school …From day 1 u are in med school…2 to 3 years of pre med subjects +3 to 4 years of Med School @ UMKC…in Missouri.

In state it costs about 25 K to 30 K per year.

Out of state costs 45 to 55k per year.

Med scholar program…4 +4…93 K +200 k=293 K
these are difft programs…U will get BS+MD

I am telling him that it is not worth to pay 200 to 240 k for just an undergrad with no guarantee of med school.
Wash u,emory ,Northwestern & Georgetown selected him for undergrad…no money

2 more days to go

Our daughter received a number of high cost school admissions – Vanderbilt, Emory both gave no merit awards. These schools are out of our consideration now. She can go to a popular public university in the south for almost free but she does not want to. She loves university of Miami dearly but she was rejected by their 7-yr HPME. And she has the acceptance of SLU medical scholar. This is the only medical scholar she got.

As her parents we are sending her to SLU. Your number of “Med scholar program…4 +4…93 K + 200 k=293 K” is fairly accurate. In considering the college cost, it is more affordable. A chunk of the med school part will be on her. We live a debt free life style so having to consider med school loan still bother us a lot.

In my opinion the college degree does not warrant having student debt. Student loan is forever and we are saving it for the medical degree, if needs to. I told her the major outcome of graduating from a college, famous or not, is the window sticker in her car. I never asked my doctors where they graduated from.

Back in my mind I still wonder if I should have let her go with Miami with a regular pre-med, then to see if she will get into med school (eventually). For some reason, Miami just seems to fun and attractive. (sign) In the end, we bite the bullet and chose SLU. I hope this will be the better decision.

Anybody ever face this dilemma?

Time is …2am

I just finished calculating for Northwestern &Wash u STL.

Wash u costs 225 K +…MO state gives 8K …No travelling…we live in STL

He does not want STL college

Northwestern Costs Easy 240 K + travelling+…=250 k

SLU med scholar with scholarship= 300k

6 year med school @ UMKC= 228 k in state

He can be debt free if i pay all of it…or may carry 100 k loans with an MD degree in his hand for the rest of his life.
I am almost decided.

What did you decide finally, Stanley1?
