200 Church

So I took the student housing tour at WesFest, and have since been trying to decide where to live next year. I was really struck by the idea of this program house -- foregoing a traditional dorm and instead living in a tight community devoted to diversity. My parents, however, seem to think it would be a bit isolating from other freshmen in Clark/Fauver/Butterfield.

If anyone could expound on the benefits and downsides of this program house -- particularly for freshmen -- I'd be infinitely grateful.

My son lived at 200 Church street in his freshman year and loved it and formed very close relationships with men and women of different backgrounds to his.Though he is not “of color”, he is accustomed to having a diverse group of friends and was interested in the theme of the house. He counts the 200 Church folks as “family” which I believe is common with the students who live there. My son also made friends outside 200 Church,
but the 200 Church experience was unique and highly recommended as an option.

I was under the impression that freshmen had to live in dorms, and program housing only became available after the first year.

I think that’s true with the exception of 200 Church.

According to the housing tour, Westco is open to freshmen as well.

Thanks for the account, Icali!

I lived in Fauver my frosh year and wished I had lived in 200 Church. The people that live there become incredibly close, and the “isolation” from the rest of the frosh is a) pretty much nonexistent, you’ll meet people through classes and clubs and all kinds of stuff, and b) a generally POSITIVE thing, because frosh year can just be a mess and 200 Church keeps it a little more under control.
