The 2005 Princeton Review Rankings are out.
Here's what lists MIT got on:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Rank/List/Category
#17 - Professors Get Low Marks - Academics
#1 -The Toughest To Get Into - Academics
#7 - Their Students Never Stop Studying - Academics
#3 - Campus Is Tiny, Unsightly, Or Both - Quality of Life

Haha, I remember my interviewer saying that the professors aren't that great at teaching, but then again, you can always ask other students for help. :)

What I don't know much about is the last one... unsightly campus?

Well, I suppose that's all changed now because of the Stata Center, haha. But in all seriousness, MIT has a pretty ugly campus. The only pictures you ever see of it is of that little patch of green behind known as Killian Court.

does it really matter how ugly it is? Personally, I never walk outside due to the cold. You can get to just about anywhere on campus inside an academic building.

Hmm, it kind of matters to me because I don't plan to spend all four of my undergraduate years indoors, even if it is really cold. However, the school's academic qualities are still the most important to me, and how the campus looks is simply an added plus. ;)

ive been to the campus a few times, its not that bad. theyre just saying that because (a) the students who respond to the questionnaire are top students who might have chosen an ivy where the campuses are wonderful for the most part, and (b) MIT is daring in its selection of architecture and i suppose they like the more traditional.

Their "top 20" in this category, in order, are:
Caltech, Webb Institute, Reed, Olin College of Engineering, Harvey Mudd, Middlebury, MIT, Wabash, Grinnell, Davidson, US Coast Guard Academcy, US Naval Academy, Marlboro, Kalamazoo, Haverford, Swarthmore, New College of Florida, Bryn Mawr, Carleton, St. John's (MD).

i've got to say the campus has gotten a lot prettier in the last 5 years. i remember visiting in high school and thinking it was pretty ugly, but i've been there every other weekend since (my girlfriend goes there), and i think the new buildings have gone a long way--the new fitness center, the stata center, simmons hall, the vassar streetscape, etc.

is simmons the one that looks like a big cement block with holes? i thought that was pretty ugly, especially in this one picture where it was painted all these nasty colors.
stata center looked very spiffy, though.
and i thought MIT got #1 for architecture in some ranking (US News & World Report?), so how does that work...?

You can have one or two buildings that are architectural gems but an ugly campus overall if those buildings don't match or coordinate with the rest and/or other buildings are crappy. Think of wearing Gucci shirt with winkled pants from A&F...

I suppose if you get tired of looking at MIT's campus, you can walk across to Harvard. Or any other of the fifty colleges in the Cambridge/Boston area.
