[] GPA: 8.2 8.3 8.7 (10th 11th 12th grades respectively. GPAs in Vietnam tend to be lower than in the US b/c big marks are few and far between. But mine still sucks even by VNmese standards:D)

[] Other stats: TOEFL PBT 670/677 (I never sent Amherst these scores b/c it was waived. It prolly wouldn't have mattered anyway)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I liked the common one. The supp was written at 5 AM Dec 31 in a state of semi-stupor after an all-nighter I spent chatting and procrastinating. Plus I picked the prompt about "the universe" b/c the other ones were like too random;) I was afraid it was too cliched and not very personal. I had to stretch a bit to make it not too short - the result was 400 words out of a 500-word limit)
[] Teacher Recs: 2 required (mediocre), 1 peer rec (neat), 2 additional (good, maybe). I was frantic, alright.
[] Counselor Rec: 1 for SSR (good to great)
[] Hook (if any): I took SAT IIs in the social sciences and humanities, which very few Asians/VNmese in particular do. Not stellar scores (see above) but it worked:) Otherwise I had a bunch of antihooks: intel asking for A WHOLE LOT of finaid, bit nerdy, so-so stats, essays and rec.

Amherst was my first choice school and I would give up all my other acceptances to have one from them. I think I'll stay on the waitlist, but I'll end up choosing between Princeton, Carleton, and Haverford, most likely.

Your recs seem much stronger than mine in academics..and i got accepted.

I am really happy I got into Amherst..
again, the supplemental essay probably got me in--
I literally had tearful stories that you see on the news.

I've been rejected by Brown, Dartmouth, Williams, Swarthmore and was waitlisted by Haverford, and Amherst is the only place I sent that essay to.
College processions are really random...this one kid I know had sub-2000 SAT and class rank of 27/431 but still got into Swarthmore. crazy world.

Yeah, pastariffic, for the record, got the shaft. I know her, and I know that her essays were far better than mine, and she beat me head-to-head more times than I can count, yet I got in...I'll never understand college apps...

I suppose that's what I'll have to decide in the next couple of weeks, along with whether it's worth paying, over Notre Dame free (faculty brat), or Washington University in St. Louis (part. scholarship)

Stats:

General Comments: I'm a little shocked... I wasn't expecting to get in, and I'd actually pretty much ruled out Amherst because I didn't want to get high hopes and then have to face rejection. In the past two months I've resigned myself to attending some of the other schools on my list, but an acceptance at Amherst complicates things. Definitely unexpected.

Haha ... no worries, Deanchhsw and hanumang06 (wth? small world ...) A lot of people are qualified who don't get in ... that's life ... good luck with your decisions!

Got in because of a sport. 4 years varsity in high school in said sport.
Had decent extracurriculars.
Brother went to Amherst.
Planning to attend? Yes. Solid.

Rejected..
3.76 uw GPA
31 ACT, 12 on writing
Lots of ecs, won't bother to list
Kind of a bummer, was deferred early, but I'm not too upset because I'll be going to Tufts which was a very close second choice. Congrats to everyone who got in though!

waitlisted. kind of disappointed, Amherst was my first choice, but I've got lots of great choices: Brown, Carleton, BC, ND, Bowdoin. I am keeping my place on the waitlist though.

Admitted.
4.00 uw GPA, 4.3 cumulative weighted
Flute, German Club, Science Olympiad, other music stuff
Essays definitely weird; I was in my Annie Dillard stage at the time

I <3 Amherst! I'd give anything to go there, and it seems I'll have to, since they decided my family's rich (when we're not). How hard is it to pay off 40k in student loans? I'll start working on it.

GPA: 3.96 UW, 4.7 W
SAT: 2340 (740M, 800 CR, 800 W)
AP's: Calc BC, French lang, US history (all 5's)
EC's: lots and lots of community service and human rights activism, art, swimming.

Kind of disappointed, but I'm going to MIT, so not staying on the waitlist. :)

Accepted!!! I'm ecstatic!!! I found out via the "admitted students" chat invitation in my e-mail today at school, and I ran around yelling in the hallways for a few minutes. Yes, I know, I am somewhat, uh, quirky. :)
