how many people on the board got this ? I did not -

Bball - you have a 3.8 from Cornell? I'd say count yourself in, you got nothing to worry about.

i got a 3.6 first semester, and ~3.9 for my mid-term semester thing

Hmm - That is definatley a good sign, the question is how much can they really infer from 5 lines and how many people got this email.

yeah...i also hope itz a good sign.....

I never got a personal e-mail or phone call after I applied, and I was accepted right after the May 1 decision date. Not sure what that means, but I don't think it's a common think overall.

it could very well be a good sign, but it could also mean that you are very BORDERLINE, which i guess is a good thing....

Come to think of it, they're probably checking to see if you're still interested so they can get a good yield rate - oh those sneaky b*stards.

and penn claims they dont start reviewing aps until may, can we possibly start hearing by May 1?

I called them last week - they said they will start reviewing them this week.

BTW, I am a Freshman at W&M.

After May 1, when they make a decision, my thought is they get some semblance of your packet in order and send your acceptance to your Pin website thing, with the acceptance packet in the mail about a week later.

I know I'm really late doing this but Brian (&others...) how do you think my stats are?

GPA: 3.91 @ Mt. Holyoke after 3 semesters - 1 B on my grade report, in a non-humanities class (I'm a history & polisci double) but I sent them a letter letting them know I received an A on the midterm, a grade I got back after I sent in the grade report. Have also overloaded on credits every semester. Have taken several 300s & received As, etc.

SCORES: ACT, 32 Composite, 610m 710v (high school), 640 Math I, 690 Writing, 760 Lit, 5 AP Lit, 4 AP Spanish, 4 AP Gov (took Soph. year), 6 IB Psych, 4 AP US History (did as an Indep. Study bc my school didn't offer it)

ECs: President of the Sailing team, Internship @ a big org in Philly last year, Research Asst. for head of the history dept., active member of the college dems, sit on the club sports council, etc. etc. Lots of leadership in high school and was almost a prof. dancer.

Recs: I know one was INCREDIBLE (written by my prof/head of history dept.) and I'm sure the other one was really good too...both were written by people who've been on faculty for years and years.

I feel like being at a 7-sister is kind of a hook, bc a) it's an unusual environment and b) I've heard Mount Holyoke has a really academic/rigorous reputation.

Also have been working on an Indep. Study with the one prof. who wrote the amazing rec...am going to submit the paper for publication in a few weeks (it's on the last 5 years of Erasmus' life and is SUPER interesting!! haha, oh god) ...it was in the area of history I want to study at penn, which isn't offered at my school.

Also took a class at Amherst last semester and got an A.

Dad is on faculty @ Penn. I know they usually give preference to children of legacy/faculty, yeah?

BUT...I have an "F" (yes, literally) on my high school transcript from my senior year and other grades were weak as well (long story, and they have a letter of explanation on file). I did well earlier in high school and applied to Penn as a senior - they called my h.s. for my first quarter grades, deferred and then rejected me. Fair enough. But I talked to my admissions counselor then who said I had great recs and essays and if I'd just gotten a B in calc (the class I failed)...etc. etc.

I feel like I have a pretty good shot, esp. since I've to college and done extremely well, despite my poor performance senior year.

So THE GREAT QUESTION - will my current stuff overcome the senior year??

Also applied to UChicago, Wesleyan, Swat (but just for ****s and giggles, I would LOVE to go there but would never dream of getting in) and Tufts.

So chances? Esp. in terms of Penn?

(I know this is a LONG and late post, but I didn't feel compelled to actually join CC until now)

yeah, i'm thinking the email could mean you're very borderline, like bball said. who knows.

and actually, a friend of mine that was admitted last year got the email saying that the decision was ready and the admissions packet on the same day. i guess it's just different for everybody.

looking at your numbers, you seem like an extremely qualified applicant. they probably wanted to see your response, and i agree with the above poster who said they most likely wanted to see how interested you were. best of luck. where did you guys hear about other people getting these letters? That bums me out that I didn't get one, but my numbers are highly unconventional

KM86, I would say you are a very, very strong applicant. I also failed a class my senior year, which is why I didn't attend an ivy league to begin with, and I explained it and put a very positive spin on the adversity I had. Don't worry about having one 'B', those minute details don't say much at all. I don't know why Swatty seems more difficult to get into than Chicago or Penn - if it's where you realllly want to go, I really hope you get in, but I'd be quite surprised if you got into Penn and not Swarthmore (Swathmore?). I hear it's really rigorous, but so is Chicago. If I had it to do over, I would have considered Chicago, and would love to do grad work or post-doc there, such a stellar school, and a bit more academic and less Wharton-like.

Did you apply EA for Chicago - if yes, good luck tomorrow.

Ha, no OFancy - I go to Penn, and am on this sight to tell people about my transfer experience a bit - I was just saying that if I could go back to last year, I would have thought of Chicago. Are you applying to Penn and Chicago?

Hey Everyone. Sorry to ask this question once again, but like KM86 I'd like to ask Brian82721 (others too, if you all feel so inclined) what he thinks about my stats.

I go to NYU (Stern) and am looking at Wharton. I applied ED last year but was deferred then denied. My college GPA last sem. was 3.85, and at for the midterm report it was a 3.925. I'm currently the Pres. of my Hall Council, a rep. to all res. halls in the university, and I also do work study nearly 17 hrs. per week.

As many already know, I'm very concerned about my SAT/ACTs. They are the following: SAT- 710(m)/610(v); ACT- 28(comp.). I truly hope Penn can look past these numbers; I just don't test very well. =( However, I took 9 APs in high school and pulled off nearly a 4.0 GPA (one B in AP Lit). I got my AA degree (4.0 GPA) from a cc when I graduated from h.s. and was extremely active --like most applicants, I was the president of 4 diff. activities, the initiator of one, and I did couple varsity sports.

Lastly, my advisor (who was once an admissions councilor for Georgetown) said that my essays were strong (take that info. whichever way you want), and my teacher recs should have been up to par (I have good relations with my Calc. II prof. and french prof.).

For the record, unfortunately I didn't recieve an email from Penn asking to respond to a ?.

Thanks everyone and best of luck.

If you look back to last year's Penn threads, it looks like Wharton took several kids with high GPA's and lower SAT's. Perhaps Wharton uses transfer admissions as a way of bringing in the kids that they were hesitant to accept out of highschool for fear of lowering their selectivity statistics. The fact that you were deferred most likely means that you were one of these kids they were on the fence about (unless you were a legacy and it was out of courtesy) and your ability to keep up a high GPA at Stern may give your application that extra boost. Good luck.

Also, for others- the other Ivies that are generally more accepting of transfers (Brown, Cornell) seem to have become much more difficult this year- has anyone heard anything about Penn, like number of spots available for instance? I really hope Penn does not drastically go down as well, although I wouldnt be surprised since they may very likely continue the trend of last year which saw them go down to around 17 percent.

Yes I am applying to both (and Georgetown).
