I applied to 8 and got into 7 of them

Applied to 8 I think. Got rejected from 1.

My son applied to 8, three of which were early action/rolling. He might have applied to more had he not been accepted early at at least one of those.

i'm applying to 9.
Reed, Macalester, BC, Pomona, Amherst, Brown, UCalBerkeley, Claremont McKenna, and Northeastern(safety). maybe i should apply to more safeties....

11

4 Top choice, 3 match reaches....and 3 match safeties....and one Community College~~~

^^~

You guys are crazy. I am applying to 3 and that is it. If none of them accept me, unlikely, I swear I am moving to Thailand or back to South America. Ha.

I had done 12 myself: 8 reaches, 1 slight reach, 1 match, 2 safeties, luckily 11 of them were on the common app or else I clearly would have died

here's my updated list.....

Pitzer
BC
Pomona
Claremont McKenna
BU
Macalester
Northeastern

How many reaches/safeties should one person have? I'm looking at 4 matches, 4 safeties, and 2 reach schools.

I have 3 reaches, 3 match-reaches, and 2 match-safeties

Spunky, have you thought about Occidental? It's in LA and similar to claremont and pomona. I am considering all three.

can't the UC's count as one, since its one app?

UC's shouldn't count as one because even though it's one app, they're all pretty different.

lol who applies to 10 colleges? Its either you have lots of money OR you don't know where you want to go.

I know where I want to be; so am applying to only 1 college.

Sure hope you can get in & can afford it!

A young man I know only applied to one school. It's a state school that "everyone" gets into. For some reason, they didn't accept him. He appealed, didn't apply anywhere else, and ended up school-less (well, not really ... there ARE cc's & other state schools). The point is, he ended up disappointed. He is not attending school this year as a result.

The moral: try to find at least another school or two that you wouldn't mind going to, if need be.

My daughter applied to 8. She was rejected from one, withdrew from one (she decided that the school was not for her), was waitlisted at one and was accepted at 5.

7 colleges

8-12 is a good number for most people unless you get in early decision or early action, and, therefore, are in no danger of coming up without a college. Sure there are expenses involved in applying. But that money is small change relative to the overall cost of college, and it's a good investment toward going to the best possible school for you and having adequate fallback protection. A good strategy is to have approximately the same number of reaches, matches, and fallbacks. One fallback is not enough as we see in the example above. So let say 3 fallbacks, 1-3 reaches, and 4 or more matches - in today's environment good schools are turing down MANY kids qualified to go there, so this many matches are appropriate. You can never taake them for granted. My son, now a freshman at a top 20 school, was top 15% at an excelelnt private school with boards of 800 writing, 780 or 90 in verbal, and 700 in math. He had MANY ecs incluidng success in athletics and high awards for artwork plus great recommendations. His classes were loaded with APs and honors courses. In other words, a terrific candidate. He applied to 8 schools. Yale (strong legacy) - rejected; Northwestern - clearly qualified but rejected; Middlebury -clearly qualified but waitlisted; admitted to UVA, ND, Davidson, BC, and Michigan. He was, again, a great candidate, but 8 applications were not too many for him. Based on what happened to him at Northwestern and Middlebury, he could have been rejected by any of the schools where he ultimately was accepted. In fact, he would have applied to several additional schools had he not been admitted early to ND, BC and Michigan (rolling).

I'm applying to 8 becuase I need to compare scholarships and fin. aid from each.

So far I have applied to two state universitys. I will probably apply to about 3 more sometime next week
