Applying to so many universities isn't a good idea because colleges don't like it when you aren't being serious. Do an early decision to your 1st or 2nd choice and apply to maybe 2-3 more colleges. 10 or more is absolutely ridiculous not to mention the application fees.

how do they KNOW if u applied to one or ten? It's all a game of economics. You want to maximize your choices and be able to compare and so you take action that maximizes your benefit and minimizes your cost. The cost is all relative depending on how much money you have or how poor your are(fee waivers). Besides, as I have lived through the admissions process I have seen my first choice become my third choice and my third becoming my first. It is just so unpredictable for us 18 year olds to just commit to one college. I applied ED and got deferred and I really think I'm lucky since I've learned a lot about admissions and now I have more options for me. If I was given admission to my ED school, now I would have to visit and think.
Again play the game to maximize your benefits. If you think application fees are marginal compared to the choices of schools you will have and the ability to compare financial aid packages then go for it. If you don't, then that's your decision.

Yes it's a lot. But over three continents. I have my favorites and my safeties (with really nothing in between- because i probably couldn't afford any of match schools), and if I get any sort of financial aid it will have been worthwhile.

I would've qualified for fee waivers (due to very-very limited financial resources) had I not been an international student. The college application process, sats, acts and everything has been on my tab though. It'd be too much to ask my parents to pay for my crap. I pretty much DRAINED my bank account from the prize money I had won from science competitions-- oh well, I guess I'll have to win more. :p

Now wish me luck getting in!

1 college. NYU. made it. sweet. (tho my mom filled out apps to other colleges unbeknowst to me)

Haha oh jesus. I somehow ended up applying to 23. I have no idea how this happened, but it did. I applied to huge universities and art schools and a buddhist college and tiny liberal arts schools and a school in paris and costa rica. I can;t even remember all the places I applied, and had forgotten I applied to Oberlin til I got the acceptance letter. It actually wasn't a lot of work at all, and I feel happy in this ignorant haze. Plus, last time I checked the list, I liked them all.

i applied to 10. and have so far been accepted to 6. still have to hear from 4. i needed a wide range bc my parents continued to remind me that i could not go to a school for 40,000+ a year. so i applied to a variety in hopes for half tuit scholarships. so far some have pulled through thankfully and i will likely not have to go to my state school that i applied to as a safety, though i know i would be happy there if i had to.

i know i would be happy with all the schools i applied to, and actually wish i had applied to some more competitive schools.

does anyone else wish they had applied to maybe one or two more competitive schools now looking back?

i did 4 college
Cornell(ED), UCHIC(EA), Cambridge;UK , and Stanford
Got accepted at the first 3...withdrew Stanford in Jan

I applied to 12 colleges. Admitted to 7 so far and still waiting for the most important 5 ones. lol

I applied to 4 EA and one ED. Got into all of them.

2: UGA and GaTech. Accepted to both, regular decision. Uga was a pretty safe bet, but I had some cold sweat for GT. In hindsight I wish I'd applied to a few more places. I foolishly didn't do much research before late in the game and procrastinated a lot. Finished both apps hours before the deadline.

applied to 16: 5 UC's, Stanford EA, 6 Ivies, 3 more privates
accepted so far to: UCSD, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Davis...waiting on Cal
rejected by: Stanford, MIT, Wellesley

i really hope i can get into a private.... i hate how they ALL come out on Thursday, except for maybe Northwestern.

good luck to all of us that are still waiting!

After decisions are out it would be interesting to make a poll with how many colleges u applied to + how many you got accepted to :D

I went overboard. But, with the exception of three, I believe every other college had much to offer to me, in its own respect:

Excited about:

Stanford SCEA (rejected)
JHU
Brown
UNCCH (RD Accepted)
Duke
Emory
Northwestern
Rice
Princeton
UCLA (Rejected)

Reticent about (but determined that if I get accepted, I will rethink them):

Washington U. (Waitlisted, like most people)
UC Berkley

Safety: University of Missouri

Shouldn't have (either irrationally for prestige or to have some extra safety schools):

UC Davis (accepted)
UC Irvine (accepted)
Harvard

15 Total

i'm sure 8,000 people already said this, but i'm not reading all of the posts, haha.

why would anybody apply to an obscene number of colleges, usually when they don't know anything about half of them? thousands of other kids who actually want to go to one of those colleges will have less of a chance because of frivolous applications.

I applied to 6.

Notre Dame (still waiting)
USC (still waiting)
Boston College (accepted)

I applied to so many because of a mix of indecisiveness, fear of getting rejected, and worrying over being able to pay. Oh, and I liked all the colleges I applied to. :)

oops, i forgot mine.
