2006 Scripps grad...ask me questions!

Hi there!

I graduated from Scripps in 2006 and absolutely loved it. It was 100% the right choice for me. I was a JES scholar and was admitted to other very competitive schools, including CMC. I am currently in law school and feel that Scripps prepared me very well.

I also had a very active social life (haha) and knew people from all of the other Claremont colleges, so I'm well-informed about that if you want to know anything.

Well, 2007 Scripps grad-to-be, and heading to law school after a one year deferral...

If you could elaborate a little on how Scripps prepared you for law school, it'd be great. I know that "nothing nothing nothing will ever prepare you," but I also feel like the Claremont environment--discussion based, emphasis on reading/wriing, theses--can't hurt. I'd love your take, and any advice you might have.

(And if you don't mind my asking, where are you currently in school? Feel free to PM the info if you'd rather not post it.)

Did the graduate schools you applied to look well upon your graduation at Scripps?

I think Scripps prepared me well for law school because of its writing/critical thinking emphasis. I am in school with a ton of people who majored in things like econ or finance at big state schools, and they never had to read something and critically analyze it. The level of work I did at Scripps, in terms of intellectual difficulty, was similar to what I've seen in law school. Actually, a lot of stuff I did at Scripps was much harder. Law school is more difficult only because of the sheer amount of work and the competitive atmosphere.

I think that going to Scripps did help getting into law schools. I am currently at a state school in the Midwest, because that's where I'm originally from and I wanted to be near my family. I also was admitted to USC, U of Chicago, and others.

Just to add my two cents to the grad school question, one of my law acceptances came back with a handwritten note: "Wow! Scripps _____ major...you'll thrive here!" I've heard similar responses from grad faculty since then.

After hearing so much "The people who matter will know," it was nice to have the claim validated :)

I see... And the reason I'm asking this is because my parents have never heard of Scripps College (Which, for them, implies that it's not an academically strong college) and they think I won't be able to get into med school by going there.

Email the pre-med advisor at the Joint Science Center and ask if she has stats on med school acceptance or any other helpful info for you. You can find her contact info by googling stuff along the lines of "Claremont + Joint Science + pre-med." You can also contact the office of Career Planning & Resources (you can find contact info on the Scripps website: http://www.scrippscollege.edu) and ask if they have any stats/info about grad school placement in general.

Scripps has 800-900 students, undergrad only. It makes sense that people haven't heard of it. Whip out rankings (yes, I agree that they're largely useless, but they still work for convincing people that a school is legitimate), pre-med placement stats (stellar), undergrad research opps (browse the Scripps website to find recent articles on the Goldwater and Newton fellows, as well as on the undergrad(s) who recently won an award for best graduate presentation at an international science conference), admissions standards (i.e. "Most Selective," average SAT, GPA, etc. Find the same stats for bigger name schools and hold them up for comparison), and so forth. You might also look up similar info for the other Claremont schools and explain cross-registration. For example, Mudd and Pomona have some of the highest rates in the country of students who go on to pursue PhDs, and both schools' facilities will be (to varying degrees) available to you.

http://www.claremont.edu provides a good overview of the consortium. Call admissions and request viewbooks to show your parents (trust me, see how beautiful the campus is and suddenly you stop caring about anything else).

...all possible ways of validating Claremont in the eyes of non-believers ;)

Good luck!

belovedin: Our Pediatrician's daughter went to Scripps and now she is an MD.

thanks for all the info!
i will certainly try and give a better shot at convincing my parents Scripps is an excellent college choice!
