I'm double legacy so I get put in the legacy pool, too. I'm the exact opposite of xian... high GPA but pretty lowish test scores. I wish I lived in Philly - Penn seems to be pretty lenient when it comes to Philly applicants' SAT scores.

Class of 2009 Early Decision Statistics

· There were 3,420 total applications in this year's EDP pool, a new record high. Penn admitted 1,169 of these (34.2%).

· The average combined SAT score for students admitted during EDP is 1413 (694V + 719M).

Legacies:
· There were 523 legacy applicants in the EDP pool, down 5.8% from last years 555. 254 of these students were admitted (48.6%).

· The Alumni Council on Admissions has completed a total of 708 interviews of legacy applicants from June 2004 thru December 2004. With Regular Decision and Transfer candidates still coming in, we anticipate finishing the '04-'05 admissions cycle with more than 750 interviews.

^thanks for the info Hazmat. What year are you at penn?

Im only second generation legacy on one side. I still get put in the legacy pile right?

You must apply ED for your legacy status to be recognized.....yes.

I can actually trace my lineage back to William Rittenhouse (i.e. Rittenhouse square, Rittenhouse town) who was wayyy before Ben Franklin. Rittenhouse emigrated in 1688. They really didn't have Penn then.

stats (I really didn't want to do this, cos I'll feel like a prick. But i guess it helps to know where you stand.)

tm2000 - My D was salutatorian for class of 2005 in HS because of her commitment to band all 4 years. The val dropped band for one semester to take another AP class (block scheduling so class limits). Both applied to Penn RD for class of 2009 - my D was accepted and the val was rejected. You are to be highly commended for your commitment to the band. I know you'll be successful with those stats.

All these legacies..I'm scared lol.

There are tons of legacies applying from my class.

I have a question - does admissions REALLY give the same the same weight, everything else being equal if it's a grandparent rather than a parent who is the alumni, a double legacy versus a single, or a parent who went to the grad school rather than the undergrad?? Assuming no difference in their donations to the school...

Are all legacies created equal?

LOL, I would think so...only difference would be between "generous" alums and "we wish we never acceped you, you ungrateful bum" alums

Sanitofme, thank you very much for your compliments :).

Having a sibling who attends Penn with parents who are legacy is significantly stronger than just the parents. With a sibling enrolled, Penn is less likely to deny you because they are counting on parent donations, which won't be so generous if only one kid was accepted. Legecy is all a money game.

I posted this in another thread and thought some people might be interested in it.

I just ran across this from Peterson's, Panicked Parents book( except in this family it's the other way around ;)

Common sense suggests that only early decision applicants are top-notch students - not only more organized but also more qualified than the masses, who, months later, will be racing to finish their regular decision forms. While many admissions officers do little to dispel this myth, in truth, the early decision option can be a good bet for more middle of the road candidates as well. To some degree, the bird-in-hand versus two in the bush theory is operating here. Even if some of the early birds aren't as strong as the rest of the flock that will follow in the spring, admission folks know they are sure things. "It is somewhat easier to be admitted early decision here," says Lee Stetson, dean of admission at the U of Penn (where about 40 percent enters under the ED option)."Everybody likes to be loved, and we're no exception at Penn. We want students who really want to attend, not those who are resigned to come."

This IS somewhat dated, I guess - because ED is now closer to 50 not 40 percent, but still interesting (and hope inspiring).

"Yes. And now that i live here I've realised the beach repulses me to no end"
