What the heck happened to MIT!

princeton and harvaard again...whats new?

well, what did you expect? its not like we didnt already know that great Princeton would be ranked #1 : )

how certain are these?
I'm surprised Stanford didn't go up O.o

um, p staying at 1 wasnt very certain at all, with the lower 08 admissions stats and all.

Jtiger: at first i thought that as well, but then i realized that UPenn was ranked #4 even with its 20% acceptance rate.

Anyhow, the pluses of Princeton far outweigh the "lower" yet still highly competitve '08 admissions stats.

*how certain are these? *

This post is taken from a post on the Harvard forum which was taken from my post [url=<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=89561%5Dhere%5B/url">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=89561]here[/url</a>], which I got from a user named barrons who had quickly posted the list. There are some inaccuracies that came to note after I created the list, but assuming barron's info is correct, the list is correct for the most part. Check out that post I linked to for followup info.

Hmm didn't expect Brown to go down, esp after they got a huge donation (more endowment) and have been steadily increasing in recent years.

rc251 - thanks!

There was a lot of speculation that Yale might leapfrog Princeton and Harvard. Some thought Princeton might fall to third etc. A lot of people were saying that with Yale's new Financial Aid policy and their new rank they would get record applications. However, it seems that they stayed at third place, and Pton is still number one :)

But I think you shouldn't take these rankings seriously. Apply to a college that YOU like....not people at US news.

I find it mind boggling that UPenn rates so high. What is it about it that makes it do that? Why isn't it HYPP?

Wooh, look at Lehigh U go.

The second post here contains a slightly updated list:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=89519%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=89519</a></p>

Lehigh actually gained 5 spots (not 6), but it was the biggest gainer in the top 50.

So when is the new edition coming out?

Online Friday, in the stores on Monday - or so they say.

prettyfish: I just don't think a lot of people know how good of a school Penn is because it may not be as prestigous as other well-known schools. For example, if you were to get into a specifics-oriented debate as to what makes one school better than another, you'd probably find lots of blank stares after a short period of time. Too many people ride on prestige and acceptance rates. Penn is simply bigger so it has more room. A school like Princeton has a lot of money but has a small class size so of course their acceptance rate will be lower. It's a myriad of factors. Penn has gotten better over the years. I'm not exactly sure what factors USNEWS uses. Regardless, they're kinda irrelevant rankings. Once you get to the top 10 or so you're just splitting hairs.

Penn is extremely underrated; most people only know about Wharton. But why shouldn't it be up there? It's a great school, pays it teachers well, the students are happy, they have top notch professors, etc. etc. It's like twice as big as Princeton, so if you think about it this way, its acceptance rate has to be twice as high. I think nursing drags it down, and Wharton pulls it up...but if you compare the College to Princeton, the quality of the education you will receive is about the same.

So using your logic Princeton's acceptance rate should be 4 times that of Swarthmore? That is a farce, there should be no linear correlation between student body size and acceptance rate. While i concede there is some validity to your claim, a larger school should be able to attract more applicants and thus decrease acceptance rate. (maybe not enough to negate the difference, but still) Anyways, Penn remains terribly overrated but I guess one must respect their admissions chicanery.

FYI, this for Penn Eng freshman, avg SAT 1460, that is with 25% admit rate.
