2007 Community College Transfer Results

I don't think that a transfer result thread exists focusing solely on community college students, so here it is. Sorry if one exists but got buried, I'll admit I didn't spend a lot of time looking.

Location: Costa Mesa, CA (Orange County)
GPA: 4.0
SAT: 1430 out of 1600
ACT: 31 composite

Major: Economics

Applied: Harvard, Columbia, U Chicago, NYU CAS, USC, Northwestern
Rejected: Harvard, Columbia, U Chicago
Accepted: NYU CAS, USC, Northwestern
Will Attend: Northwestern

Location: Houston, TX

ACT: 34

Major: Philosophy

Applied (in order of preference): Wesleyan, WashU, NYU CAS, UT McCombs
Rejected: NYU CAS
Accepted: Wesleyan, WashU, UT McCombs
Will Attend: Wesleyan

Brand_182, that is odd you got rejected from NYU CAS, you seemed like an very competitive applicant.

yeah it was a tough year. 6% acceptance rate. I may as well have applied to Columbia ;)

NYU's loss right?
I like this thread idea. I always worry that my being from a CC will really hurt my chances but it is nice to see the results of people like myself.

heh well I gotta admit I loved NYC - a lot. But from what I'm hearing from the few accepted transfers - between beyond crappy FA packages, last pick housing, and being forced to study abroad for the first semester, and the fact that NYU isn't as well regarded as my first two preferences, I think I'll be alright. ;) Besides, there's always law school.

Adam - I think being from a CC is actually a blessing in disguise. If you've got your stuff together - that is, a high GPA, good test scores, good leadership positions, and some good recs (which are quite easy to get coming from a CC environment) - one of the top schools is likely to give you a shot as you're unique from most transfer applicants. Honestly, I know College Confidential skews things a bit, but what percentage of transfer apps to the top 30 or so schools do you think come from community colleges? I'm willing to bet less than 10%, and if you can set yourself apart as one of the best performing and more interesting CC students, you've got gold.

definitely nyu's loss.

but i'd prefer wes or washu anytime, anyday.

brand_182, nice test scores. I'm assuming you re-took them after High School? (based on the fact that its out of 2400)

To prospective community college students.. you all have a great chance at getting into some nice schools. ALL my cc friends that applied were accepted into Berkeley/UCLA this year, one was accepted to Haas with a 3.7 and no extracurriculars (he had a job, thats about it). My counselor told me a few kids (and one returning adult student) got into Columbia as well. Personally, I couldn't be happier with NU.. since I'm an econ major, I would probably pick NU over Columbia if I were accepted to both.

Location: Rural Kansas
GPA: 3.8
SAT: 1760
ACT: 23

Applied: Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Pomona, Bowdoin, Brown, Amherst, Cornell
Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Pomona, Bowdoin
Waitlisted: Amherst (later denied - overenrolled)
Accepted: Brown
Will Attend: Brown

Brown.. Nice. What kind of ec's?

Also, is it possible for a school to ACCEPT you then deny you for overenrolling? Sounds horrible, but I have to ask.

yep took the SAT once in high school (1350) and ACT (30) without studying. If someone thinks that they can do quite a bit better on a standardized test and they are coming from a CC, I definitely recommend it.

I was President of Phi Theta Kappa. Had some awesome non-school-related activities and independent learning since I was very young though. I have an uncommon mix of interests as well (weightlifting and pastry baking anyone?).

Although I am thinking realistically about my chances at a fair amount of the schools I would like to apply, I am trying to stand out while still enjoying myself. I feel like perhaps I don't have enough in the way of school clubs but I make up for it with other ECs such as creating a local music label/distributing local bands and working with the elections board 3 years running. its good to see so many great schools show up in these lists and I hope everyone has a great time where they end up...oh yeah, learn a little too while you are at it.

Location: Los Angeles, CA
GPA: Roughly 3.8 combined GPA

Attended two schools at once, at times taking as many as 31 units/semester (don't know if that was a contributing factor in my admission results)
Completed ~120 semester units, G.E. classes

Major: Philosophy

Applied (in order of preference): Columbia, NYU, USC, UCLA, Cal, UCSD, USF
Rejected: Columbia, NYU
Accepted: USC, UCLA, Cal, UCSD, USF
Will Attend: UCLA

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Disclaimer:

Disclaimer: I am not transferring yet!

However, my college publishes a list each year of colleges that accepted our students this year, and some of the highlights are:

Brown University (2)
Smith College (2)
Mount Holyoke College (2)
Wellesley College
George Washington University
Cornell University (3)
Tufts University
Yale University
American University
Wesleyan University (3)
Trinity College (5)
University of Vermont

And a bunch of others. But anyway, just wanted to make sure people know that anything is possible! We get knocked so much, so it's nice when people get great acceptances like all of you. :) I've learned to expect this of my peers, so I wish others would as well...

Wonder how someone got into Yale

taromakino, I was wondering the same thing.
