2007 Early Action Results Thread

Bamboy--to be honest, maybe the fact that you're a white male. i def. think this makes it harder, as you are far from a URM

as for reg--you say that your recs are generic...i personally think that this area might have been what got me in...try to think of some supplemental recs that you can get...as much as they dont like to read it, a fat admissions folder usually is better at a school the size of georgetown (as opposed to a place liek umich)

i also know that interest was slightly more important this year with the bump in apps from kids that want to go to princeton and harvard--they dont just wanna accept the princeton and harvard class of 2012!

Thanks everyone for the support with that :) I'm still a bit shocked I didn't get in... I knew I wasn't the most outstanding applicant but I thought I had a chance, oh well. I still haven't even gotten my letter yet! Is it bad that I'm holding on some odd hope that what they told me was a mistake and I'm really in? :)

deferred...and really devastated since G-town was my #1 choice

token, you claim that you "deserve" it, but lets face it, if it weren't for affirmative action and you being an athlete, you would be going to neither georgetown or harvard

What's with the whole token angerfest? I know you're all angry, and I'm seriously not taking sides, but just let it go, its getting ridiculous.

BTW, what does anyone think might've been my weakspot?

Sal, I'm surprised that you didn't get in... It makes me sad. I felt like my stats were on par with yours. Just goes to show that it really is all just a crap shoot. I'm sure you'll get in RD. I know this doesn't really help you, but I'm cheering for you!

Good luck to all those that are deferred, there are a definitely a lot of worthy candidates for admission on here.

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I was fortunate enough to get my acceptance to UChicago a few days before my Georgetown acceptance, and I feel that UChicago would be both a better fit for me and more financially feasible, so I probably won't go to Georgetown. From skimming this thread, I'm going to say that some of you will probably get unreasonably angry at me for having said that, but 's the truth. Still, the proof of the pudding will be coming later this week (UChicago financial stuff) and then on April 1st (all other acceptances/rejections and financial aid/scholarship info).

i guess i'm sorry for being black and athletic.
i'm a pretty nice person if you get to know me, but i'm never gonna get offended by someone who bases their entire opinion of me based on "i don't care". have at me.

oh and yeah ur right. i'm "not going places" because i made a mean comment on a website to people i don't know. may god have mercy on me. god this is so ridiculous.
and to the affirmative action/athlete comment, harvard wanted me before they even knew i was black. and i didn't even put that i wanted to play sports at georgetown on my app. so it was one at one school and another at the other. which one do you wanna go with?
and last time i checked, my SAT scores were still close to the 75th percentile for georgetown (640-750 and 650-740). correct me if i'm wrong. black or not. and as for my GPA, i go to the best private school in TX. we get TONS of students accepted to georgetown every year (24/50 over the last five years according to naviance) so they know that a 3.65UW is no cakewalk.
i'm done with this thread.

amen, token. Affirmative action, Athlete; all of these things aren't automatic hooks in any way. Affirmative action gives only a slight, if not even noticeable edge for certain applicants. And a good athlete is very representative of a person with a good work ethic, and other positive qualities that colleges are looking for. It's not like you can become a good athlete without any effort whatsoever. Stop hating!

Dude, all of you are taking this too seriously. It's one college. One. Yeah, it may be your first choice, but tough. If you've worked hard, some college is going to appreciate you, whether it's Georgetown or not. It is irrational to think that no other college can give you as many opportunities as Georgetown. And IMO, it is completely okay to apply to a school early action without a full intent to go there. That's why it's NOT a binding early decision. Some people apply early action because that is their 1st choice school. If so, great. Others just want to have their decisions early. Is that truly so horrid? Give me a break. Give everyone a break.

Anyway, a deferral isn't a definitive "no." It's just saying, maybe you should consider another school meanwhile, if that is a possible prospect for you. Good luck despite all this. Just please don't get self-righteous on the rest of the CC community, just because you didn't get into one school and because you believe that it is "morally wrong" or "unfair" that someone applies to a school just for the heck of it.

For the record, Georgetown is my number "1" school. I have not been accepted nor deferred; and I personally don't care that much, because there is a plethora of other schools that have already accepted me and that I would be completely happy in attending.

Let's relax everybody. If you'll excuse my athletic reference, token89 "played by the rules" and achieved his goal in this instance. It's hard to fault someone who did what this website suggests often--which is to apply to a variety of schools--matches, reaches and a safety--in order to make sure that he had a good group of schools to choose from.

Sure, nobody likes to hear someone talk down the school--or apply to it as a "safety"--especially if its somebody else's #1 choice and they may have been recently deferred, but I'm sure that the Georgetown people have figured all of this in their "yield" numbers and know how many acceptees are likely to go elsewhere for college.

Token89, there is one thing you can do that I'm sure will be appreciated by the people on this Georgetown forum,though--and that is to send in you declination of the acceptance fairly quickly once you are sure that you will be attending another school.

While you may be asking, "Why should I do any of these people any favors?", I'd ask that you consider that by declining you are actually most likely helping not one of the people criticizing you on this forum, but rather a different URM applicant who is attempting to get into Georgetown. The university likes to "balance" its diversity pool--and by knowing quickly which URMs accepted are unlikely to attend, they are able to open up a spot for a different person of a similar background. The reason they do this is so that differing views can be represented in classroom discussions--and is one of the primary reasons that URMs are given priority in the admission process at most colleges.

I think this is a fair request and I hope you will at least consider it. By doing this you might be able to help broaden the horizon of the other students and make sure they get exposed to minority issues in their Georgetown studies.

Thanks,

P.S. For those who are keeping track of acceptances and deferrals, I should point out that back on page 18 huutuyet should have stated that he was accepted to SFS (he failed to indicate his status). I have spoken (e-mailed) with him recently and know of his status--and Georgetown is, I believe, his #1 school.

"token, you claim that you "deserve" it, but lets face it, if it weren't for affirmative action and you being an athlete, you would be going to neither georgetown or harvard"

If a kid wasn't naturally endowed with intelligence, he couldn't get a 2400
If someone wasn't able to walk independently, he couldn't run track.

Get over yourself. How can you censure someone for being black or for working hard to be a superb athlete then turn around and attribute all of someone's academic prowess to hard work. As if the advantage of being naturally gifted and being black, and thus contributing something that is desirable to the university, are two different things. College is not an award, whether you get in is determined as much by what the college desires as what you can bring to the table. If you don't have what the college is looking for and get rejected, in the end, that's life. Grow, learn, and develop marketable skills so that it is less likely to happen again.
Token might be abrasive, but some of the posters are no less rude or hypocritical.
