Navy and North Texas set a major-college record for points scored in regulation by combining for 136 in the Midshipmen’s 74-62 win on Saturday. </p>

<p>It wasn’t the highest scoring game of the season, though. Division I-AA Weber State and Portland State racked up 141 for the all-division record two weeks ago. The Wildcats won, 73-68. </p>

<p>Navy (6-4), which has the nation’s best rushing offense, set a school record by running for 572 yards with eight rushing touchdowns a week after snapping a 43-game losing streak to Notre Dame…

The message from Coach Paul Johnson to his players at Navy’s football practice Wednesday was simple: Look forward to the next game at North Texas and let rest the euphoria from beating Notre Dame, 46-44, in triple overtime and ending an NCAA-record string of 43 consecutive losses to the Irish. </p>

<p>“We haven’t been able to focus all week,” Johnson said. </p>

<p>And in the chill of the early evening, Johnson merely was echoing the words of just about every football coach who ever had to bring a team down from the emotional mountaintop to the reality of the next game. (Did NASA officials face a similar task with the original moonwalkers, getting those guys ready for the next mission?)…

North Texas head coach Todd Dodge has been around football for pretty much all his life and never experienced a game like the one the Mean Green played against Navy on Saturday.</p>

<p>UNT racked up a 635 yards of offense, saw quarterback Giovanni Vizza set an NCAA record for touchdown passes in a game by a freshman with eight, and still managed to fall to the Midshipmen 74-62 at Fouts Field in a game that set several NCAA records.</p>

<p>The 136 combined score established an NCAA record for points scored in a regulation game and tied the overall mark for points set by Boise State and Nevada earlier this year – in a game that went to four overtimes. The 63 combined points in the second period was also an NCAA record for a quarter…

<p>Veteto Named To The ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Director’s Academic All-District II First Team</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Navy senior punter Greg Veteto (Corpus Christi, Texas) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Director’s Academic All-District II First Team. Veteto will now be on the ballot for Academic All-America honors. </p>

<p>Veteto, who carries a 3.98 grade point average in Ocean Engineering, is averaging 37.2 yards per punt on his 12 punts this season for the 6-4 Midshipmen with two of his punts being killed inside the 20. Navy is on pace to break the NCAA record for fewest punts in a season. </p>

<p>Navy will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Northern Illinois on Senior Day. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.</p>

“Bizarre” was Navy coach Paul Johnson’s one-word assessment after his team allowed 62 points and still won yesterday.</p>

<p>There were lots of other words that could be said about the Midshipmen’s 74-62 victory over North Texas. Some of those words from defensive coaches might have been unprintable.</p>

What went right
Just about anything that had to do with Navy’s offense. Six Midshipmen ran for touchdowns, with Shun White’s 131 yards in seven carries leading the way. After quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada was injured, Jarod Bryant led Navy to four second-half touchdowns. “He can come in and run the offense. We went to more of a fullback offense with him in there,” coach Paul Johnson said. Navy attempted just six passes, but gained 108 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass from Kaheaku-Enhada to Tyree Barnes…
