Escape artists. That's what Navy's football team tried to be last night.

It worked, despite missing what would have been a game-winning field goal with seven seconds left in regulation. The Midshipmen were able to pull out the victory in double overtime, 48-45, when Joey Bullen's 29-yard field goal held up.

Pittsburgh missed an opportunity to end a three-game skid when a fourth-and-goal pass went incomplete....

What went right

Navy's offense continued to play well, scoring 30 points for the fourth consecutive game and fifth time in six games this season.

What went wrong

At the start of the second half, in a game in which every possession seemed destined for a score, Navy backup right guard Curtis Bass was called for holding on second down, taking the Mids out of their rhythm and presenting them with a second-and-16 situation at the 22-yard line. Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada was sacked for 4 more yards, and then the Mids' attempted punt was partially blocked, presenting Pitt with a golden opportunity that it cashed in for seven points and its first lead....

Back-and-Forth Affair Ends With Double-Overtime Triumph: Navy 48, Pittsburgh 45

For a second, Navy's players did not react after the fourth-down pass from Pittsburgh quarterback Pat Bostick fell incomplete in the second overtime. Yet when no penalty flags were thrown, it became apparent that Navy's 48-45 victory, which featured more than 900 yards of offense, had been clinched on a play by junior cornerback Rashawn King.

The Midshipmen (4-2) appeared in trouble after Pittsburgh (2-4) had a first and goal at the 2-yard line in the second overtime.

But the ball was still at the 2 on fourth down. The Panthers called a timeout before the crucial play. On the Navy sideline, Coach Paul Johnson told the team to expect a running play, likely to freshman LeSean McCoy (165 yards rushing, three touchdowns)....

Pitt and Navy had not played since 1989 before the game last night at Heinz Field, but the series began in 1912 and has a lot of history.

That's why the two schools had a combined effort to celebrate some of that history by making two of the greatest players to play in the series -- Heisman trophy winners Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach -- honorary captains for the night.

The two legendary players met at midfield with the captains from their respective former teams for the coin toss and received a warm ovation....

Pitt and Navy staged a scoring-fest before 30,103 at Heinz Field last night as both defenses were completely overmatched by the offenses.

But the Midshipmen finally figured out a way to stop the Panthers in double overtime and came away with an exciting, 48-45 victory.

Joey Bullen gave the Midshipmen a 48-45 lead with a 29-yard field goal to open the second overtime, which meant the Panthers had one possession from the 25 to tie or win the game....

Navy holds off Pittsburgh in a wild 48-45 victory.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Joey Bullen kicked a 29-yard field goal in the second overtime and Navy then held as Pitt went for the win on fourth and goal, and the Midshipmen upset the Panthers 48-45 Wednesday night.

Pitt (2-4), losing its fourth in a row despite freshman LeSean McCoy's 165 yards rushing and three touchdowns in an almost defense-free game, appeared to be in position to win when Navy (4-2) settled for the field goal and the Panthers got the ball back with a chance to win.

But, with Pitt facing fourth-and-goal at the Navy 2, coach Dave Wannstedt went for the win rather than the tie and freshman quarterback Pat Bostick overthrew tight end Darrell Strong in the end zone.

The Panthers, in desperate need of a victory after losing to Virginia by 30 points and Connecticut by 20 in its last two games, never found a way to slow Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, who ran for 122 yards and a score and threw for another.

But with former stars Tony Dorsett and Curtis Martin watching, Pitt showed off its next star running back in McCoy, who scored three touchdowns for the second time in his six college games.

Navy's Reggie Campbell scored on a 25-yard pass by Kaheaku-Enhada in the first overtime after also scoring on a 4-yard run and a 10-yard pass play in regulation.

McCoy had given Pitt its first lead since the second game of the season, a 34-10 win over Grambling State, when he scored from the 2 early in the third quarter to make it 28-21.

Navy, playing its sixth consecutive game in which at least 30 points were needed to win, later took a 35-31 lead when Kaheaku-Enhada scored from the 3. The quarterback's own 37-yard run out of the Midshipmen's deceptive triple-option offense led to the score.

But Navy coach Paul Johnson's own gamble failed -- a fake punt with Navy leading -- and, with a short field, Pitt quickly drove 45 yards for the go-ahead touchdown when McCoy scored from the 21 to make it 38-35.

Later in the quarter, Wannstedt took a chance -- and succeeded -- by going for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 27 when freshman quarterback Pat Bostick hit Cedric McGee on a rollout for 12 yards. But the drive stalled, and Pitt punted with about 1 1/2 minutes left in regulation.

There was plenty of offensive talent in Heinz Field -- the honorary captains were Roger Staubach and Dorsett, and Pitt honored NFL No. 4 career rusher Martin at halftime. Fittingly enough, there was plenty of offense and very little defense as both teams followed their season-long trends.

Navy, No. 2 nationally in rushing with an average of 348 yards, opened leads of 7-0, 14-7 and 21-14 as Campbell scored on a 4-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Kaheaku-Enhada, yet Pitt answered each time in Bostick's first career start at home. Bostick went 20-of-28 for 191 yards and an interception.

Bostick began the season as Pitt's No. 3 quarterback but was elevated to starter in what was supposed to be a redshirt year due to Bill Stull's thumb injury and Kevan Smith's ineffectiveness.

Bostick looked unsteady at times while playing in relief during a 34-14 loss to Connecticut and a 44-14 defeat at Virginia in which he started, but he and fellow freshman McCoy had no trouble moving the ball against a Navy defense that gave up 138 points in its previous four games. McCoy has 668 yards in his first six college games.

Earlier this week, Wannstedt challenged Bostick to score at least 28 points, saying any number less than that wouldn't be enough. Bostick got the 28, and a lot more, but it still wasn't enough.

a real nail bitter!!

Wonderful game!

The game came down to one play by Pitt's choosing, and maybe the Panthers' season did, too.

A chip-shot field goal sends the Panthers and weary Navy to a third overtime, a handoff to LeSean McCoy may have won it. Instead, a coach desperate to win called, essentially, a desperation play - and lost.

Now, the question is whether only a game was lost, or an entire season was, too....

In a game dominated by offense, it was Navy’s defense that made the biggest play.

Navy got a 20-yard Joey Bullen field goal on the first possession of the second overtime and held Pitt on four straight plays from the 2-yard line to come away with a dramatic, 48-45, win on Wednesday night at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Midshipmen secured the victory when cornerback Rashawn King patted down a pass in the corner of the end zone on fourth-and-goal....

On a night where the offenses from both teams stole the show, it was a pair of late defensive stops that led to Navy's upset of Pittsburgh last night.

Navy and Pittsburgh staged a classic shootout last night at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monangahela and Ohio rivers.

The Midshipmen and Panthers marched up and down Heinz Field virtually unimpeded for nearly four hours on a cold, rainy night in western Pennsylvania. There was virtually no defense played in the wild and wacky affair, which saw the two teams combine for 915 total yards....

Raise your hand if you thought Navy lost the game last night in the first overtime when sophomore nose tackle Nate Frazier jumped off-sides just as Pitt was about to settle for a 35-yard field goal in the first overtime. Raise your other hand if you thought Navy lost the game after Pitt had the ball first-and-goal at the Navy 2-yard line in double OT. Raise your hand, well, you get the point…
