I recently discovered that Navy head coach Paul Johnson and I have birthdays just two days apart.

Johnson was born on Aug. 20, 1957 while I arrived into the world on Aug. 22, 1965. Don’t ask me why, but somehow this interesting fact had escaped me during my initial five years of covering the Hickory, N.C. native as head coach of Navy football.

Having been made aware that Johnson and I have a special kinship, I decided to point that out to the gruff and often grump head coach during practice on Monday....

Transcript of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Press Briefing Following Practice On Tuesday, August 28

In Attendance: Ron Snyder (Baltimore Examiner)

Snyder: Has the intensity picked up the last couple of days with the game now within reach?

Johnson: I don't know about that. I think everybody is getting excited to play. Hopefully, with the way we've practiced, it's hard to pick up the intensity a whole lot. Practice doesn't change much for us.

Snyder: How do you feel the defense is coming together at this point?

Johnson: We will be fine. We have some young guys. We will see how they play. They run around pretty good. Are they going to do everything perfect? No, probably not. The offense isn't going to do everything perfect either. We just have to do everything full speed.

Snyder: I was talking to Coach Hardin (Wayne) today about what he's trying to get accomplished as far as a big crowd at the game, what are your thoughts on his efforts?

Johnson: I think it's great. He has a lot of energy and is a really vibrant guy. I think it's tremendous that he can be there. He's meant so much to both programs.

Snyder: Temple is still a young team and you beat them pretty easily last year, but it sounds like they are ready to come out and pull off the upset.

Johnson: I don't know if that would be an upset. Last year is last year. We just have to go out and play as well as we can play and see what happens. If we do that we will be OK.

Snyder: I see that Corey Johnson is going to be playing some special teams. How do you feel he's made the transition from basketball to football?

Johnson: Corey's worked really hard. I don't know if anybody has worked any harder than Corey. Hopefully he can get out there and do some things. It would be good for him. I know he's excited.

Snyder: Does having you first game on a Friday night on a national stage and on national television make it a bigger game?

Johnson: Not really. It's a big game anyway. With it being on a Friday night I'm sure there are a lot of people that are going to be at high school games. We are excited about playing no matter what.

Snyder: Can you talk about the outside linebackers? They have some big shoes to fill, but you seem pretty confident that they can do it.

Johnson: They just have to do their job. They don't have to do anything special. They don't have to be David Mahoney. They just have to do their job.

Snyder: How are you health wise?

Johnson: Good. I think we have pretty much everybody. Kevin Campbell (third-team fullback) tweaked a hamstring and he's probably out. Other than that I think we have everybody.

Special leap working out for Navy Sr.

One of the more uplifting stories of Navy's preseason camp involved the development of defensive back Corey Johnson, the former varsity basketball player who is giving football a shot as a senior.

Johnson was a three-year starter at point guard for the Navy basketball team so it came as somewhat of a shock when he announced in March that he was switching sports. The 6-foot-2, 192-pounder, who had not played football since leaving Highland High in 2003, shook off the rust and re-acclimated himself to the gridiron during spring practice....

Midshipmen put plebes in prominent places

Fate would suggest it was inevitable that Ricky Dobbs would develop into an outstanding quarterback.

After all, Dobbs was born on Jan. 31, 1987 - the same day Doug Williams became the first black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Dobbs' mother was so enthralled with watching Williams lead the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 romp of the Denver Broncos that she apparently put off giving birth....

Underfed Mids laying 20.5 on the road - Take Temple and the points.

Hope you all won't mind me posting this in this thread, but since I know many of you will be at or watching the game tonight, I wanted to ask you to tune in a little early.

Many of you may know of Andy Person, who played football at the Naval Academy, (1992-1996) as did his brothers, Chris, Dan and Joe. Andy lost his dear wife, Dottie, to cancer earlier this year. She was only 32 years old and she and Andy have five beautiful children. Andy and Dottie are from Philadelphia.

In memory of Dottie, Andy Person and his five children have been named Honorary Captains for the Temple Football Team on August 31, 2007 for the Temple-Navy game. This will be a special chance to remember Dottie and to honor Andy for the amazing husband, father and person that he is. Andy and the kids will walk on the field at 7:15 p.m., before the game, while Dottie’s name is announced along with a brief statement about her Temple and Naval Academy connections.

This means so much to the family. Please remember them in your prayers.

Thanks TurekMom - somethings transcend football.

KEY: Find a way to score points

Temple managed just one meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter of last season's meeting with Navy. The Owls were held to 27 yards rushing, gave up six sacks and had two interceptions.

Head coach Al Golden knows that Navy will dominate possession and said he doesn't want to get into a "chess game" of trying to have Temple hold the ball as well....

Navy faces Temple with questionable 'D'

Temple came to Annapolis last November to meet Navy in the season finale for the Owls. It was a complete mismatch as the host Midshipmen routed the young Owls, 42-6.

In a real oddity, Navy now travels to Philadelphia tonight to take on Temple in the 2007 season opener. Will the result be similar?...

Navy - 24

Temple - 10

Number of mids at Temple game (approx.):

Cheerleaders + Team + D&B + mids in stands = 200.

One mid was seen doing pushups in stands after first Temple score.

Sarcastic clapping reported when first 10 mids arrived in stands, in uniform for game.

Jumbotron at Navy-Temple game keeps showing the same group of mids over and over on screen.

Comment (on another message board) from the Navy press box:

"It's Like 'Capricorn One'"

Navy is ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter and I want to cry.

That, and give that one mid doing pushups a huge hug!

Temple - 19
