Coach Hits Century Mark in Wins as the Midshipmen Hold Off Temple in Opener: Navy 30, Temple 19

Navy Coach Paul Johnson was given a game ball following his team's 30-19 victory over Temple before 30,368 at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

"I'm not sure I deserve it the way we played," he said after his 100th victory in 11-plus years as a head coach.

Navy led 14-0 following a 44-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada with 4 minutes 51 seconds left in the first quarter....

Greg Sudderth's move to wide receiver from defensive back was easier at Navy than it would have been at other schools.

The Midshipmen have led the nation in rushing in three of the past five years entering their season opener against Temple tonight at 7:30 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

The flip side to a successful rushing attack is a stronger emphasis on blocking from the wide receivers. Despite having played defensive back for 2 1/2 years, Sudderth said he was not that far behind the other wide receivers when he moved last October....

Mids open with sloppy victory

Navy finished off Temple's miserable 2006 season with its usual run-heavy steamrolling.

A little more than nine months later, the Midshipmen weren't quite as efficient but still generated the same result.

The Mids grinded their way to a 30-19 victory over the Owls last night before 30,368 at Lincoln Financial Field, earning a sometimes-ugly victory in the season opener for both teams....

O.J. Washington calls himself a wide tackle.

The Navy senior plays wide receiver on the football team, but in Coach Paul Johnsons triple-option offense, receivers are primarily counted on to block, not catch.

Its tough going out there blocking 33 plays in a row and then on third-and-long, coach calls your number to do a passing play, Washington said. At that point you really have to concentrate and just accept the challenge with open arms and want the ball because you dont get it too often....

The 2007 edition of the Temple football team was unveiled Friday night at Lincoln Financial Field in front of a crowd of 30,368 that was the Owls' largest since they moved to their new home in 2003.

Navy was in town to test the young Owls, and the visitors were challenged before registering a 30-19 nonleague victory. The Midshipmen had handled visiting Temple easily last season for a 36-point win....

Navy senior slotback Zerbin Singleton wants to be an astronaut. Singleton wouldn't mind rushing for a bunch of yards in the Midshipmen's opener against Temple on Friday night, and he'd love to win a bowl at the end of the year, too. But what he really wants, more than either of those things, is to be an astronaut. And he will be.

Singleton is someone who's set to do whatever he wants. After all, he already has....

GO NAVY!

BEAT ARMY!
And everyone else!

[I'm a Louisville grad, but due to dd, my blood is starting to turn to Navy Blue and Gold.] I'm also glad Navy doesn't face Louisville. Their game was MUCH worse (for the other team) than the score (73-10) indicated. Louisville only played reserves after 1 minute of the 2nd half, and only threw 3 passes after halftime.

Indeed, we all love Navy ... or should.

And my observations are 2:
1. We can be very thankful for an opener vs. Temple. A great university founded on "acres of diamonds" with one of THE most awful football programs on the planet. A good USNA start and confidence builder for sure, but no cause to start crying Orange Bowl, yet.

Be so very thankful that indeed Louisville was neither the opening night gig, nor a regular season opponent. Neither would be pretty, despite our having the upper coaching hand. Louisville has moved uptown in the football rankings, at least for awhile.

ANDY PERSON will hear her subtle, soothing voice again tonight. He'll feel her crystal-blue eyes gazing down on him. Dottie Person, his wife, will be there at midfield at Lincoln Financial Field. She'll be alive and well again, laughing as she always did on festive occasions.

Andy will hear Dottie tease him about how her Temple Owls will open their 2007 football season with a victory over Andy's Navy Midshipmen....

Navy coach Paul Johnson hopes Friday night's 30-19 victory against Temple proves beneficial to his team this week.

"We found a way to win," Johnson said. "We hope to learn from it. We had a lot of young guys playing who had never been in a game before. I hope to see a lot of improvement from that game to our next game. They'll learn a lot from having played meaningful minutes."...

Heavyweight boxing legend Joe Frazier attended Friday night's Navy-Temple football game at Lincoln Financial Field.

Frazier, a Philadelphia native, looked dapper in a pinstripe suit with matching tie, hat and handkerchief as he rode the elevator to his club level seat. If Smokin' Joe was scoring this season-opening football game, he would have handed Navy a majority draw....
