Suggestions: To those who did poorly in high school and on the SAT, be sure that you demonstrate trough your college coursework that you’ve matured, and that your previous mediocre performances aren’t representative of your ability to perform above standard in upper level courses. I happened to have the highest grade in several of my math/science courses this last semester, and was fortunate enough that my professors could vouch for my exam scores while providing the class averages for comparison. I believe these grades, and taking heavy course loads (19hrs) with mostly challenging courses helped me seal the deal at Emory, Wake, and Brandeis.

Wash U makes early decisions, which I feel hurt my chances since I wasn’t able to submit 19 more hours of As. However, I also found several grammatical errors in my Wash U essay, although my discovery of these flaws allowed me to correct additional mistakes I would have made on my other essays.

Good luck to everyone in the upcoming cycles, and congrats to everyone who just finished! Hehe, I feel like we all graduated.

Suggestions: ESSAYS! DO WELL ON THEM! Take your time to do them, don't just knock them out in a night. I started jotting down ideas in Jan., started writing in Feb, and finished at the end of Feb. Whenever I felt bogged down at VT and wished I was at UVA, I switched over to write a bit in my essays. This way, my writing sounded more personal and reflected the true way I felt. I wrote about 2 pages (12pt, 1" margins) for each essay so I kept it short, but got to elaborate a bit. Concentrate on the reasons why you want to change, and focus on them. Mine was mainly curriculum reasons, yet I did mention the other good things about UVA. Don't slam your current school, but instead find the positives and explain why they don't fit you.
Also, take time to contact the school, especially if there are not an excessive amount of transfers. Contact the dean or assoc. dean in the department you want to enter and ask questions (email is the best), whether it's about the curriculum or what reasons you want to transfer for or how your credits will transfer, or just shoot the breeze. Then, when you write your essay, say "and I talked to ______ who pointed out that the program does _____ which fits me because _______". The adcoms give you a big gold star not only because it shows you're really interested (which means good yield rates for them), but that you took the time to see how you can fit into their school and do well. But use your essays to their best advantage. Hundreds of other applicants might have the same stats as you, but won't have your essay. Make yourself stand out, yet show how you'll fit into their school.

Oh and don't hesitate to send extra stuff. I sent in a resume (one of the essays asked about activities you've done, but I used that to talk about two passionate activities of mine) and then a "101 Reasons I Want to Attend UVA". I still laugh that I even did that, but hey, I go in didn't I? =P

And, GOOD LUCK!

Suggestions: Have faith. I was convinced I wasn't going to get into either one of these schools. DON'T worry about the caliber of the school that you're coming from - I thought WM was just another state school, but after recieving acceptance I realized that it must be something different than what I originally thought it was.

I'm deciding whether or not I want to transfer, actually haha. Maybe WM is a diamond in the rough...

hey azazello.. congrats!!
those 2 are my dream universities..

Suggestions: Make sure that you are transfering for the right reasons. If it is solely for presitge, then don't do it. Although prestige was one of the reasons that I am transfering, there are several other reasons as well.

Also, another thing to add is that in the end, even though I pretty much had my mind made up about transfering since about Thanksigivng or so, and I am attending my first choice school, it was tougher to leave my college then I had though.

Likely Attending: likely staying another year at McDaniel because the transfer financial aid packages offered have made transfer impossible (American offered 44% of need, CUA 68% of need), I'm trying to go to DC for poli sci and broadcasting.

Maybe others know of some good places for this dual major ;-)

VERY DISAPPOINTED in TRANSFER financial aid…. reading CC and student review.com seems transferring can be a tough reach for students dependent upon need-based aid.
