It will be triple-option versus the spread option in the third annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Navy slotback Reggie Campbell isn¹t scheduled to attend flight school in Pensacola, Fla. for another few months. But in the Midshipmen¹s 38-3 win over Army on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium, most of the 71,610 fans in attendance would swear Campbell was already traveling at semisonic speed. In the second quarter, Campbell dashed into the school record books when he ran untouched during a 98-yard kickoff return, the longest by any Midshipman in the team¹s 128-year history.

Behind Campbell's standout performance, Navy (8-4) ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak, and will play Utah (8-4) on Dec. 20 at 9 p.m. in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego on ESPN.

"Reggie's been a real big play guy for us in all four years he¹s been here," Navy coach Paul Johnson said. "[He's] contributed in a lot of different ways. We like to get the ball to him as much as we can."

The 5-foot-6, 168-pounder finished the team¹s sixth straight win over Army with 227 all- purpose yards and 2 touchdowns. But one of the biggest plays he made on Saturday was at the end of the game, when he was selected to climb atop the railing in front of the Navy band and direct the school alma mater, "Blue and Gold."

"I didn't know what I was doing," Campbell said with a laugh. "There was a girl in front of trying to show me, but it wasn't working."

Utes: U. may eat tickets this holiday
By Jay Drew
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 12/09/2007 03:06:01 AM MST

Not as briskly as they would like, but far better than last year.

That's the report on how well the University of Utah is selling its alotment of 10,000 tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl, Dec. 20 in San Diego, according to assistant ticket manager David Woodbury.

"We definitely have plenty of good seats still available," Woodbury said.

By midday on Friday, the Utes had sold around 3,000 tickets for their matchup with Navy at Qualcomm Stadium, Woodbury said, noting that the goal is to sell between 4,000 and 5,000.

The Utes have to eat the tickets they don't sell, so extras will be donated to boys and girls clubs and other charities in the San Diego area. Last year, Woodbury estimates that only 2,000 or so were sold for the Armed Services Bowl in Ft. Worth, Texas, when Utah met Tulsa.

"We're ahead of that pace by a long shot," he said.

Tickets for the Poinsettia Bowl are $35 for the club and press levels and $45 for the field, plaza and loge levels. Woodbury said the Utes have tickets for seats in all parts of the stadium, but mostly in the corners. They can be purchased through the school right up through the day before the game.

To order tickets, call (801) 581-8849 or go to The Official Athletic Site of the University of Utah.

Also, season tickets for the 2008 season are available. Woodbury said the U. put season tickets on Advertisement sale shortly after the BYU game, rather than wait until June. He said around 500 season tickets have been sold to new customers in just more than two weeks.

All Louie, all the time

Junior punter/placekicker Louie Sakoda received two more first-team All-America honors Saturday, being selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and CBSSports.com.

Both organizations selected Sakoda as a punter. He becomes the only first-team selection at that position in school history. Sakoda now has three first-team honors to his credit - he was previously selected by Rivals.com as a kicker.

Looking ahead

Several Utah football players said Friday they are happy with their opponent in the Poinsettia Bowl, noting that 8-4 Navy will be a formidable foe, especially in San Diego, which has a large U.S. naval base.

If they return to the game next year, however, in all likelihood they will be stuck against a 6-6 team just like BYU is this year in UCLA at the Las Vegas Bowl. The Poinsettia Bowl gets second choice among Mountain West Conference teams through the 2009 contest.

In July, it signed a deal with the Pac-10 Conference to get that league's seventh-place team next year and sixth-place team in 2009. If the Pac-10's sixth- and seventh-place teams are not bowl eligible (six wins), the bowl would have to look for an at-large team.

Charging ahead

After practicing three times a week the past two weeks, the Utes will amp it up this week with five practices. They'll take today and Monday off, then go at 2:30 p.m. four straight days before a Saturday morning workout.

They will fly out at 9 a.m. next Sunday (Dec. 16) for San Diego and will attend the Chargers' game that afternoon to presumably cheer on former Ute All-American Eric Weddle, who was drafted by the NFL team last spring.

Navy's Singleton wins 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl/Football Writers Association Courage Award

Dec. 10, 2007

DALLAS (FWAA) - Navy's Zerbin Singleton is the winner of the FedEx Orange Bowl- FWAA Courage Award. Singleton, a senior slotback, overcame a troubled background to win an appointment to the Naval Academy, and is on track to reach his ultimate goal of becoming an astronaut. Last month, he was named Brigade Commander for the second semester.

Singleton will be presented with the award at the FedEx Orange Bowl on Jan. 3. He will also be recognized at the Orange Bowl coaches' luncheon Jan. 2.

"I am honored and humbled to be selected for this award," Singleton said. "All the credit goes to God and my family."

Singleton didn't know his father until he was a senior in high school; a year later, his father committed suicide. Singleton had been living with cousins in Decatur, Ga., since he was 11, when he left his home in Alaska because his mother went to jail for a parole violation.

Wanting to pursue military aviation and his dream of becoming an astronaut, Singleton was accepted by the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy, and chose the Navy because of the potential to "land on a carrier, in pitch black, while it's tilting left and right," he told SI.com.

But Singleton's dream was deferred when he was hit by a drunk driver one week before he was scheduled to graduate high school (as valedictorian). A broken collarbone meant he couldn't go through Navy's plebe summer, and couldn't enroll. But after a year at Georgia Tech, Singleton transferred to Navy. He's been a two-year starter. He carries a 3.14 GPA in aerospace engineering.

Last month, Singleton received orders to begin training as a Marine pilot after the football season. As Brigade Commander, Singleton will be responsible for guiding and directing the daily activities of the Brigade of Midshipmen and act as the liaison between the Brigade and the senior leadership at the Academy.

Navy will play Utah in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 20. Singleton's senior class is one win shy of tying the Class of 1909 for the most wins in school history.

Singleton rushed for 478 yards on 64 carries (a 7.5- yard average), with nine touchdowns. He had 10 catches for 199 yards, averaged 21.4 yards on kickoff returns and had 15 special-teams tackles. In his last four games, he rushed for more than 100 yards twice and scored eight touchdowns.

"Zerb is a great example of being able to do anything you want through hard work. His work ethic is something that I admire," senior slotback Reggie Campbell said earlier this year. "The guy has his phone number posted in the locker room and anybody on the team can call him at any time if they need anything thing. He will go the extra mile for anybody. He has a big heart and he is a genuine person."

Singleton was one of nine weekly Courage Award nominees this year, chosen by the Football Writers Association of America and the FedEx Orange Bowl. A blue-ribbon panel determined the winner from all of the nominees.

The Courage Award was created by ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, also a FWAA member. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.

Previous winners of the FWAA's Courage Award are Clemson's Ray Ray McElrathbey (2006), the Tulane football team (2005), Memphis' Haracio Colen (2004), San Jose State's Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo's William Bratton (2002).

The Orange Bowl Committee is a not-for-profit, 309- member, primarily volunteer organization that exists as a self-sustaining, independent organization supporting and producing activities and events which enhance the image, economy and culture of South Florida. Among the OBC's core events are the Orange Bowl Festival, FedEx Orange Bowl and Orange Bowl Halftime Show, the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, the WaMu Orange Bowl Fan Fest presented by the City of Miami, the Budweiser Orange Bowl Tailgate Party, Orange Bowl Youth Football Championships, Orange Bowl Cheer & Dance Championships, Orange Bowl Swim Classic, Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships and Orange Bowl Sailing Regatta Series.

For more information on the 2007-08 Orange Bowl Festival and its year-round schedule of events and promotions, log on to orangebowl.org, the official site for all Orange Bowl Committee news, tickets and apparel. The website also offers information on event tickets, the Orange Bowl Travel Network and experiencing the Orange Bowl Festival as a volunteer through the Ambassador Program.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non- profit organization founded in 1941, consists of nearly 1,000 men and women across North America who cover college football for a living. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game day operations, major awards, a national poll and its annual All-America team.

It didn't take long for Ricky Dobbs to show he could be the future quarterback at Navy. During preseason scrimmages this summer and junior varsity games this fall, Dobbs has flashed plenty of ability. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder has a strong arm and quick feet. He can throw a 60-yard bomb with touch or a 25-yard out with zip and accuracy. He has the speed to get outside and the moves to make defenders miss.

Comments from Navy Head Football Coach Ken Niumatalolo Following Practice On Monday, Dec. 10

On the first practice

"I thought there was a lot of energy. The guys have been off for a little while and with everything that has gone on the last few days I think the guys were just excited to get back on the field."

On the players reaction to him taking over as the head coach

"I didn't pay too much attention to that. The guys seemed pretty normal. I just wanted to keep things as normal as possible."

On his comfort level with his new role as head coach

"What happened today was I got a great perspective on a lot of things. I was able to go over to the defensive side of the ball and I was very impressed with what our defensive coaches were doing. Coach Green is as good as it gets and I am glad that he is staying."

On coaching staff announcements

"Scott (Strasemeier) will have something coming out soon, but I'm real excited that Ivin and Buddy are coming back. Ivin knows this offense. He has played in this offense as a quarterback so he brings a different perspective as a teacher. He has some insights that he brings to the table and he was taught by one of the best in Coach Johnson. He is going to do a great job."

On Coach Jasper's work with the quarterbacks

"Ivin has done a phenomenal job with the quarterbacks every year. We change quarterbacks and go to bowl games every year and Ivin has done a great job of mentoring and tutoring each quarterback and getting him ready to play. He is a heck of a football coach. The offense is Ivin's show. We are going to work together and help him, but he is going to do a phenomenal job of taking over the offense. I am not wiping my hands clean of the offense, I'm here to help him, but I know if I get out of his way and let him do his deal he will do a great job."

On Utah

"We have a daunting task. They are a very good football team. They are athletic, strong and are coached very well."

Ex-UCLA coach remains on Duke's list
Candidates also include Cutcliffe of Tennessee
LUCIANA CHAVEZ
(Raleigh) News & Observer

Former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell continued to be focus of the search for a Duke coach Wednesday, two days after he met with Duke representatives to discuss the job that came open when Ted Roof was fired Nov. 26.

Dorrell returned to Los Angeles to figure out how he might develop an East Coast staff from his West Coast resources. That's an issue within the Duke football community. The staffing problems date to the days of Fred Goldsmith. He went 8-4 and took Duke to the Hall of Fame Bowl after the 1994 season, then lost both of his coordinators and went 9-35 from 1995 to '98.

In addition to Dorrell, Duke is known to have spoken with ex-Navy coach Paul Johnson; Grambling State coach Rod Broadway; Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson; and Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe.

Cutcliffe appears to be in another group of candidates with ex-Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey. Louisiana-Monroe coach Charlie Weatherbie said Wednesday that Duke had not contacted him, but he has been told he is in a pool of candidates. East Carolina coach Skip Holtz is also being suggested to Duke.
