I got a 215 and I live in NJ, which apparently has one of the toughest cutoffs in the country. I’m fairly certain that this was the highest score from my school this year, and I’ve been reading a lot about how this years curve was really harsh (last yr, one wrong in writing got me an 80, this yr, two wrong got me a 72). I also know that someone from my school got semifinalist with a 218 last year. Is it possible that the cutoff could drop three points as a result of the extra-harsh curve?

All that post proves is that one guy thinks they’ll probably be “super high this year like +5.”

haha aight i am not worried then ;P

I read on this year’s PSAT preparation packet that the writing curve was going to be lower this year than any other year’s because they were trying to reflect actual SAT grading. I would predict that cut-offs would not raise for any state.

PKswmr76, that’s such a low score!! Unbelievable!! Do people exist who are that inept??? OOO_O I’m sooooo not jealous! :P

lol I was really happy with my 205 until I came here…
but congrats to everyone who did well!
I’m only a Soph so this doesn’t matter to me yet, but does anyone know where (if there is one) a state semi-finalist cut-off chart might be?
If I were a junior, would that be high enough for a commendation?

There’s a link earlier on this thread that lists the cutoffs for last year. NM does not formally release the cutoff scores by state. Dedicated CC parents gather this info as people reports whether they have made NMSF. NM does, however, announce the Commended level score. For this year’s seniors, that was 200. The highest NMSF state cutoff for this year’s seniors was 221.

RE: the writing scores – this year’s scores already reflect the adjustment from the old writing to the new standard. Last year was the first year that was in effect, so I wouldn’t think there’d be lots of change up or down this year. It should follow last year as a baseline, though cutoffs by state will always vary by a little.

There will not be state cutoffs available for current juniors until September 2008. Come back and worry then! We’ll still be here…

Same as last year. I’m a junior, and I suppose this isn’t bad, but I wish it were better.
CR: 79 <–1 wrong, 99th percentile
M: 70 <–1 mc wrong, 2 grid-ins wrong, 96th percentile
W: 76 <–1 wrong, 99th percentile.

When do we apply for finalist status (236 in maryland so thats obviously SF)

When you are notified in late August for semifinalist, you will receive the finalist application.

i’ve heard that people generally do way better on the PSAT than the SAT. is this correct?

i got a pretty darn good score on my PSAT, and now i’m nervous i’m gonna screw it up when i have to do it for real.

Some people exceed expectations on the SAT. I did, and that was after being a National Merit semifinalist. The PSAT estimates of your future SAT scores are based on group statistics, and you might beat the group average improvement by next year.

sat is easier than psat i think. more questions.

Yes, but that means more fatigue. Also, there’s an essay. Do you have any tips on websites to improve essay-writing?

189!!

(I literally laughed at my score, so horrible)

I was nervous that I’d screw up my good PSAT score on the SAT (228) since I’d gotten a 2040 SAT last year. But, to my surprise, I got a 2340.

174 as a Junior (57 Reading, 56 Mathematics, 61 Writing)

97 percentile guareented commended?

probably, what was your score?
