231!!! hell yes!!!

CR: -0 80
M: -1 75
W: -1 76

btw the “being passed” question was e) no error

-I’m kind of skeptic about semifinalist cutoffs, they’ll probably be super high this year, like +5 per state

Yesyesyesyes!
CR - 74 (two wrong, one omitted)
M - 80!
W - 80!

So I’m thinking I’m National Merit commended… :)

Not bad, I think I’m guaranteed for semifinalist cutoff in my state, even if it does go up by 10…

232
CR: 79 (-1)
M: 80
W: 73 (-2)

203
CR: 64 (heartbroken by this)
M: 69 (-4 even more heartbroken)
W: 70 (-3 what’s with the curve???)

I’m a soph, so hopefully my score will improve by 20 points next year. Oh and I live in Nebraska, so the cutoff shouldn’t be that high…

Hm, a pretty disappointing 213, especially considering the SAT I took the same month cold turkey came back as 2200.

CA’s cutoff is projected to be 217, so I guess I just didn’t get it.

I am ecstatic and unhappy at the same time…

CR - 79 (I need to improve vocab; those are the only questions I miss, but this is still amazing)
M - 80 (Woohoo!)
W - 69 (…
What happened? On the real SAT I got an 800)
C - 228

So, I’m happy about CR/M since that is what most summer things look at, but the writing I must say was a shock; I made a few dumb errors, and if I was more careful I could’ve at least caught one and gotten a 73, but all well. Life moves on, and it’s only practice :-)

Do you think I still have a shot at being a National Merit Finalist? I’m not sure how that really works still (do they distribute them out even among the states like semifinalists? What is the average score for a finalist, 230+ or so?)

Congrats to everyone else, people seem to be doing fantastically as well!

Yayz.
CR-80
W-80
M-71 – 3 wrong… some curve! :-(

So yeah, a mild surprise… practice tests hovered around the mid-upper 220s so im happy.

I have a quick question. There’s been word circulating on this forum that the “cutoff” will be 213, 219, blah blah blah.

By “cutoff” do you mean the semi-finalist cutoff? If you make that, does that mean that any one of those people who scored above that cutoff can APPLY for finalist positions?

Hi,

Well, I’m a junior in CA and I got a 226.

Cr:73 -3 (So stupid some of these mistakes!)
M:80
Wr: 73 -2(One of these was stupid; the other one I could see myself getting wrong again)

I’m pretty happy with my score, and I’m pretty sure I’ll qualify for Semi-finalist unless someone knows something I don’t. Does anyone have any specualations for the CA cut off?

Also about becoming a finalist: Does only the score matter, or does other stuff count in, and if so, what type of other stuff?

Thanks,

~IA

To go from semifinalist to finalist, you have to complete a form (including essay), have SAT scores sent to National Merit that are within the range of your PSAT scores or better, and have a recommendation from your school. Out of the roughly 16,000 semifinalists, 15,000 will be named finalist. The PSAT score is not considered beyond the semifinalist level.

Ykim, in May, everyone who is at least commended will receive a letter from National Merit. In late August, schools will notify students of semifinalist status (as determined by a state cutoff). In September, schools will notify students of commended status (as determined by a national cutoff). Semifinalists will follow the procedures listed above to become finalists.

208
CR 72
M 61 [terrible]
W 75

only a sophomore though.
aghhh math!!! whattt

My daughter had a feeling she didn’t do as well as last year and she was right. She dropped from 215 to 206. Hopefully that will still be enough to be commended. She’s relieved it’s over and she won’t have to worry about waiting to see if she made SF.

She got a 2230 on the November SAT, two weeks after the PSAT, so it’s all okay. The PSAT is tough, it’s a ton of pressure with a brutal curve. If you’re the least bit off your game, your score drops very quickly. Congratulations to everyone who did well.

Thanks fireflyscout, that makes me feel better :-)

Now all I need to do is repeat my success on the SAT

I am very disappointed in myself. I am a strong mathematics student, and very weak in writing and critical reading. So my PSAT scores angered me greatly.

Math - 76. 1 wrong.
Crit - 80
Writing - 80.

I got an 80 in math last year, but this year I misgridded a problem. Getting a score where you are 1 away from perfect is the most aggravating score possible. Especially when about 3 of my friends got perfect 240s and the only reason I didn’t was because of a math problem.

D or J
please lighten up
:D

I got a 235
up 20 from last year
and am extrasupersatisfied
but am not anticipating the awkwardness tomorrow in class when the results are passed out
but
wheeeeeeee

How are cutoffs determined? Is it just 99th percentile for your state?

Hmm… Nationally, I got 99th percentile across the board. In DC, I got 97, 97, 99. I received a 223 total. Do those percentiles indicate that I won’t be a semifinalist in DC, even though I’m in the 99th percentile overall (says the score report I received from my school)?? …:(

DS2 is a soph – got a 203 with no prep. He is very happy – feels he has a shot at NMSF next year with some reasonable effort. He now also sees the benefit of IB English!!! ![]()
CR 68 (+4 from last year)
M 62 (+7 from last year)
W 73 (+11 from last year)

The NM Commended cutoff for the 2006 PSAT was 200; the year before was 203. PSAT scores generally dropped last year due to the CB tinkering with the writing section. (Last year was the first year with the new PSAT writing section instead of a version of the old SAT-II writing, and it recalibrated things a bit.)

Scores for NMSF will vary by state – the idea is that roughly the top .5% of scorers in each state will be recognized. The highest minimum qualifying score last year in any state (which would apply to this year’s seniors) was 221. The year before that, it was 224. For current juniors – your cutoffs won’t be determined until next September. Chill… Learn from the experience…remember to bubble the grid AND write in the answers. Leanr to manage your test-taking time. This is only a test. In case of an actual emergency…

Help where are you guys getting your scores. I know you can get them online but how? I took the psat last year but never signed up for the college plan thing online. Help anyone?

Do you think it’s possible for a 213 to get it in CA?
