How do we possibly send a copy of a finished 2007 tax return by the end of January if we don't have all the information that we need to file???

I called each school and they told me to:

Use the 2007 tax return best estimate for the 2007 PFS (I use a software program so it was fairly easy to plug in the definite numbers and estimates and produce a draft return w/tax due, etc.

Send a copy of the 2006 tax return to the SCHOOL (I included an explanation of any estimates included on the PFS and a range of possible differences (ie. we expect the estimates to be within X dollars of final figures for XX but are waiting on 1099s)

Send a copy of the 2007 tax return ASAP upon completion.

The schools told me that the 2006 return, plus the estimates in the PFS would provide enough information for them to determine FA, however it is contingent upon their receiving the 2007 return.

I recommend calling each school to see exactly what they'd like from you. One school said to send the 2006 return since the 2007 was not yet available, however this was not printed anywhere in the application materials or on the website. Better to make the personal connection.

yes, I need to call too. I think ours will be done (or very close) but one school said not to send in 2006 but to wait for 2007, even though THEIR web site said to send in 2006 and then 2007 when done.

Some of the schools requested the IRS Form 4506-T, so I just printed out a copy of that for all the schools, even the ones that didn't request it.

jennycraig: I did the same thing with form 4506. Why do some schools request one and others don't? Even within the TSAO, as an example, SPS requests a signed 4056 copy while Lawrenceville and Hill do not. What gives?
