2008 Admissions Stats

Even if they admit more students as the grades progress, they still would not admit 70 for 9th grade unless they had a yield rate of 100% and a 9th grade class of 70. It just seems unlikely.

keylyme -- Perhaps you could find out what it was. I have no vested interest in NMH, but it just doesn't seem like it is probable. BTW, most schools do increase class size after 9th, but only 70 in 9th grade for a school of over 600 is unusual.

from NMH website:
How many students will be in each grade next year?

Each year, students enter the school at various grade levels. The ninth-grade class typically numbers 100 students. Additional students join each year, bringing the senior class size to about 220 students, including approximately 50 postgraduates who have graduated from high schools elsewhere.

My son is a freshman this year and there are 98 in his class...I just counted them in the student directory. Again, several people I spoke with did tell me those same numbers (70 and 350). They could be downsizing the classes a bit, or upping the number of PG's. I do think their intention after the consolidation was too slowly decrease the numbers until they had in the 500-600 range for students.

I actually counted the entire directory (now you think I'm weird): 98 freshmen, 130 sophomores, 161 juniors, and a combined senior/PG group (they don't differentiate; just shows graduation year) of 221.

i know someone going to nmh. the school was hurt by the combination of the two different locations. i hear they are trying to downsize the school and shave off about 100 students for a total of about 550 enrolled. this is a school on the move from what i hear.

that's a pretty large amount of students and it looks like the # of applicants will keep growing..

In the most recent letter from the Blair Headmaster, I was surprised to learn that over the last 2 years, applications have increased 40%!

Two years ago, Blair received 425 applications through March; this year we received 600 -- a 40% increase. Moreover, the applicants are impressively capable and positive, though again we are competing for most of them against the richest and best known boarding schools in the country. *As it should be. * We shall not really know all the results of our invitations for some time to come, but it is a certainty that the new students entering in the fall of 2008 will be the strongest group yet. And this last comment is one I have now been making for many years running -- and hope to make for many years hence.

St. Paul's Admission Rate for 2008-09 = 19.8% according to the school's newspaper.

That seem higher than usual?

Actually, it is lower. Last year, SPS accepted 22% and was overenrolled this past September.

I'll testify to the overenrollment! Singles had to be converted to doubles! Including my son's. They are trying to address that this year by cutting back on the offers. Unfortunately, students do not always obey the statistical models!

I know a few ISL schools statistics

MS(Middlesex) ==> 25%

SMS(Saint Mark's School) received 655+ application for 75 slots. They gave admission to 160 students considering the studdents who got multiple admission from other scgools. ==> acceptance rate: 25%

SGS(Saint George School) acceptance rate: 29%

Thacher admission rate: 19%

Record Yield at Andover

thacher at 19??? it's only a percent lower than before.. but wow.
how many 10th graders were admitted starrynite, if you know? lol

Exeter 18%
Deerfield 16%

lol, sorry kickme_cuzimcool, i dont know how many 10th graders were admitted.. i wouls say, perhaps ten at most?

Deerfield acceptance rate is always so low but their waitlist is always HUGE!

deerfield's acceptance rate is crazy. i looked at it and said "no not this place, no not this place either.. hmm.. haha acceptance rates are 20 at andover? -bsreview- WOW. ..... WHAT??"

haha thanks starrynite. i'm like the biggest californian nerd in the world :D

It's really difficult to use the admission rate information unless you know how many apps they get for each grade vs slots available. 50 apps for one 11th grade slot can REALLY SKEW the statistics. Same for day vs boarders. There might be tons of day apps for a very limited amount of slots, depending on the size of the surrounding area. I wouldn't let 20% admission rate be too discouraging.

So I would say, in my very unscientific way, that depending on the slot you are applying for, the actual rates might be anywhere from 50% to 5%.

I would be interested to know what attrition rates are like, though.

SG aka St. George's
757 applications for 93 spaces (9.5% increase from last year) Accepted 192 making the acceptance rate 25.3%
