2008 Most Valuable Student Scholarship

Uniontown, PA.. near pittsburgh

Hey! I too was just forwarded to the district level. Does anyone know how many points they received when their portfolio was judged? And what's a good amount of points to have?

Got a call last night from local lodge. Son placed second, with top score for scholarship, but score on financial need (as expected) brought down overall score "a little." Don't know if there is any award for second place here, but he was told the top three are sent to the district level. Does the judging change in any way there and beyond? Seems like low financial need would have same effect as one advances.

Don't know anything about my points (now you have me wondering)
Iowa, and proud of it!

I'm from Stockton, CA. I'm a local winner, district finalist, and state competitor.

My letter said (dated Jan. 28, 2008):

Stockton Elks Lodge is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as one of six recipients of the Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" scholarship. As a winner of the local lodge level, you will receive a $500 cash award.

Then Feb. 06, 2008:

"You are a California-Hawaii Central District finalist and have been forwarded to the next level."

Then I may get a state letter. Anyone else from my district?

what....they are done with the state already.....omg..i haven't gotten any letter yet...

i haven't gotten anything yet either =[

Has anyone from OK received a letter? We are still waiting AND hoping.....

I'm from OK and I haven't heard a thing. I'm hoping too!

If the student has a good academic achievements, but in a middle-class family, meaning maybe labeled as not in financial need , does the student have a chance to win this scholarship?

I haven't heard anything either. My lodge is in West Virginia.

I was told that as the applicant advances to each level, the application is scored again "from scratch." Some portions, such as SAT/ACT scores and financial need, are scored with an objective formula and are therefore "cut and dried." The other portions, such as the essay and leadership, are subjectively scored and may come out differently. So, hopefully, a student from a middle class family does still have a chance. Good luck to everyone!

OK peeps, I'm from Tulsa and haven't gotten anything. However, I did email the local lodge, which gave a very cryptic reply.

"Scholarship application have been forwarded to the next level."

Now... did they notify the winners? Their response didn't answer my question. And how many did they send to the next level? Application is singular but the verb is plural. ARGH.

I'm from Greenville, SC, and they said they have no results yet.

PA. haven't heard from district. =</p>

everyone should keep in mind Txokmom's post:

<< Jan. 29th - Lodge Judging Completed
Feb 19th - District Judging Completed
March 5th - State Judging Completed >>

Yeah, but some of us haven't even heard from the local lodge.

i would try calling your local lodge.

Well, i think it also said if you haven't heard from the institution within 3 weeks of the date then you should contact them. But my post was more directed toward those of us wondering about districts.

well, I just got a letter two days ago saying that I advanced to the state level even though I never received a letter from my local lodge. there is a possibility that you already passed a stage but wasn't notified. so call if you want to be sure.
