I was honestly kidding about my earlier post in this thread-I don't know if any of you feel the same but there's a bit of pride in being waitlisted. Not 1/4th of being admitted, but lets put things into perspective...

Stanford admissions officers have placed us in top 15% of applicants. It's been repeated here, but honestly-that's pretty good.

As the post before says, we are all amazing people. It's true, and keeping this in mind nobody should give up fighting-especially when we've been given a chance like this.

Whether we get into Stanford or not, it remains that we must have done something right in our teenage years.

And on a final note-it's more than likely that other schools have been pitching better offers. Best of luck to everyone.

Agh, this Stanford waitlist business adds on to my feeling that I'm at "the bottom of the top"; good enough to be considered but not quite stellar. (Also adding to this notion is the fact I've been deferred from Yale EA, and I passed the first stage of Oxford admissions & was offered an interview, but was ultimately rejected.) Does anyone else feel this way? (At the borderline of admissions?)
In any case, I just hope Monday yields better results.

Anyways, do you guys think there is anything we can do to improve our chances of getting off the wait list? Stanford has specifically stated they do not want us to send ANYTHING to the school. I really don't have any updates in terms of new awards or grades.

Some threads have suggested sending in letters or e-mails, but it seems that would only upset the admissions committee at Stanford. How will they end up picking students off the waitlist if it isn't ranked?

I've been waitlisted too. I have a couple of questions.

They say they would like you to inform them of new scores. I took the January SAT Subject test and the scores were sent to them on 02/12. Does this mean that the admissions committee had these new scores when they were evaluating me? If not, should I tell the collegeboard to send these new scores again? If so, will the admissions people get mad because techinically this is sending additional stuff.

Do waitlisters need to send in a final transcipt?

My 3rd marking period report card is coming out soon too. Should I send that to them? Or just transcribe it onto that little box on their waitlist form?

dwindlelights: and we both live in LA. lol. (completely beside the point, but yeah, it adds to our common thoughts)

I haven't looked at the waitlist form yet.. but I suppose we can add small details? :\ Blegh.

I hope I won't end up putting myself on the waiting list.. hopefully will get into at least one Ivy on Monday.

And as people have been saying, I'm not as upset as before - I was surprised to be put on the waiting list because I thought I'd be flat out rejected or accepted - I took a risk with this app.

Quick question....
Are waitlisted people considered before transfers? Meaning that the open positions are first given to the waitlisted kids before the remaining few (if there are any) go to transfer applicants?

I was hoping to get accepted to one of the top ranked schools I applied to but it hasn't happened. I applied to 5 and so far have gotten 1 rejection (MIT - :( - this was my first choice) and 3 waitlists (JH, Stanford, Caltech). Considering that the decision I am still waiting on is Harvard, I am not getting my hopes up.

Are colleges waitlisting a lot more people this year?

waitlisted...but got into Cal!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont see the point in staying on the waitlist seeing as how last year 0 people on the waitlist went on into the final entering class

I know that my son's year (class of 2008) they seemed to take a bunch of students off the waitlist. With this year being so different (the end of EA/ED at Harvard and Princeton) I guess they really don't know how many people will come to Stanford. I did hear that they had a higher-than-expected yield last year, and so as a consequence housing is overcrowded (it always has been anyway) at least for some; I guess that might lead them not to take anyone, or very few, even if their yield is not as expected.

My daughter was rejected :( and in a way it is a relief to have closure. But if she had been waitlisted, as hard is it is to still have that glimmer of hope, I'd be fine if she took a spot on the waitlist just so she didn't wonder "what if"--especially if they started taking kids off the waitlist. As long as you pretty much focus on the school that you do ultimately accept, having that slight possibility is not that bad I think.

every year people do get off the waitlist, so someone out there who got waitlisted is going to get in.

i got into clairmont harvey mudd/pomona and amherst, so at least i have plenty of options.

and to all the people on the other page, i'm an eagle scout and i was runner up for state controller at california boy's state. i am #2 out of 527, 34 act one sitting, and have 14 ap classes total, including this year.

go figure. some of the people who got in had amazing ecs, and sounded like really interesting people. i think stanford did a good job at picking the kids with real potential, as opposed to high scores...the essays and ecs must have counted for a lot.

still, its amazing to me that someone with our resumes arent accepted...and although thats not very modest, at some level it just becomes true.

does anyone know how many they took off the waitlist the year before last... also, is there any order to the waitlist.... there must be..... people with better stats, ec's, etc should be called first.

I don't know how many waitlisters got off the year before but I think that last year gives a much more accurate prediction for this year's trend for both waitlisted and transfer hopefuls. The number of applicants is great this year than last so it's very unlikely that the numbers will grow. Though I'm sure it won't be 0, i'd be pretty surprised if more than 50 made it off the waitlist. Just an opinion.

And no, there's no order. Everyone on the waiting list is given the same status (its not an actually ranked list). They're all regiven consideration I believe. How serious of a consideration though is the question.
