2008 UF Application Essay topic is now posted.

For all you rising seniors who will be applying to UF this summer:

The Personal Essay

Your essay is a very important part of your application. What you provide helps the university know you as an individual, independent of grades, test scores and other objective data.

Please submit one essay.
Remember to keep within the 400-500 word maximum length.

In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your family, your school or community activities, or your involvement in areas outside of school.

Important information:
Admission priority is provided to qualified applicants whose applications and supporting documents are received by the Office of Admissions during the preferred application period -- July 1 through November 1. Applications received outside this period will be considered on a space-available basis only.

It's important that you finish your essay before you start back school or at least have a semi final draft.

Hey Seiclan,
What is the address for this information? A friend of mine is interested and I want to direct her to the site. The only way I can get in is by setting up an account.

This website has a link to the application essay topic.

This one says when to apply:

They usually don't change topics like other schools do (i.e UChicago).

And remember, the earlier you submit your application, the sooner you can apply for dormitory housing. After the admissions dept. receives your application, you will be allowed to apply for housing, and you'll get your housing 'priority date'. The earlier your priority date, the better your chances of receiving your first choice dorm next year.

If you wait until the end of the application period to submit your UF application, you may not receive any of your three dorm choices, or you may not get into a dorm at all. This housing application just reserves a spot for you in a dorm and gives you a priority date. You don't actually make your three dorm choices until after you've been accepted, early next year.

P.S. I know they don't have ED anymore, but is July 1 to November 1 the only application period now?

Good luck to all of you!

Couldn't stress that more.

Yes, July 1 to November 1 is the only application period for UF this year (with a notification date of late February).

Isn't it the same prompt as last years?

it's the same prompt every year....lol

It's the same as last year but not the year before. When my sophomore daughter applied (2005) she had to write two essays (out of a choice of three) elaborating on quotes by Martin Luther King and Frank Herbert. Very tough essays.

I applied Summer 2005 and I remember that Martin Luther King essay. And then I did the whole "meaningful situation" etc.

Both g8trmom and ASMAJ mention that "the earlier you submit your application, the sooner you can apply for dormitory housing."I will be applying this summer, but cannot send in everthing until September. My High School advises that they can't send in an official transcript until September. That's not too late, is it?

Once I send in my application, exactly how do I apply for housing? Do I cocat the school, or do they send me something?

You can still submit the application without the transcript. The transcript takes longer to get the the school anyways so they dont normally get both at once.

Also, its important to know that you can STILL apply even though you are going to take the SATs again. You can have them sent to the school and can even pay extra to send them faster though you dont need too. I believe the last time you could take the SATS are in November depending on the date of the test. Dont wait till you have the your scores to apply, a bunch of my friends did that and I really think it hurt them.

The housing information will be emailed to you.

My son applied in 2005, and I remember that the housing information was e-mailed just a few days after we mailed the application (overnight mail). I've kept a timeline, because we'll be doing this again in a few years.

September 29, 2005 - Application mailed

October 3rd - E-mail from Admissions, confirming application and giving my son his UF ID number.

October 5th - E-mail from Housing Dept with instructions on how to apply for housing online, using the UF ID number.

October 7th - Son applied for housing (Oct. 7th is his priority date)

My son applied Early Decision, and the deadline that year for ED was October 3rd. We didn't know anything about priority dates, and how they affect dorm assignments. Luckily, he got his first choice dorm for both Summer B and Fall semesters. Hope this helps.
