2008 Wimbledon-What could have been...

Probably the most amazing match in the history of tennis. 5 time Wimbledon Champion and World #1 Roger Federer against #2 Rafael Nadal. Nadal wins the 1st 2 sets 6-4, 6-4, and any hope of a comeback is going away. But then, a rain delay sets in. After the delay, Federer finds the power to win the 3rd set 7-6(7-5 in tiebreak). Onto the 4th set, in the tie break, Nadal has 2 championship points(one on his own serve), and Federer saves both of those points that could have given Nadal the championship, and wins the tie break. Another rain delay(at this point you have to really freak out because Federer just came back from 2 sets down and the match has to stop)Onto the 5th set, it's basically a duel to see who will crack first because there is no tie break in the 5th set, it's just who wins by 2 games. At 7 all, Nadal manages to convert a break point. At 7-8 in the 5th set, Federer saves ANOTHER championship point, but Nadal eventually won the match on his 4th championship point on a Federer forehand error.

Still, what could have been.... Imagine, the man who has won this 5 times in a row proving that he is the undisputed champion by saving 4 match points against the #2 player in the world to come back from 2 sets down to win the greatest match of all time. Federer was only 2 points from the win though. You have to give credit to Rafael Nadal though for the mental toughness he had to shake off the 2 match points he lost in the 4th. The match lasted 6 hours(I watched the whole thing) with rain delays. Crazy! What did you guys think of it?

Match of a lifetime. Too bad Federer lost, negating perhaps the greatest comeback ever in any sport. I like Federer embracing his dark side, cursing in German after losing points.

Awesome match so many records were broken. Federer was probably bummed afterwards but who can blame him. Six hours wow and they didn’t even look tired at the end.

I’m no where near the disappointment of Federer himself, but I have felt pretty upset for the whole day. I wouldn’t have minded if Nadal won it 3 sets to 0, or 3-1 because that shows he deserved to win. But when Federer saved two championship points in the 4th set tie break, I just became so involved with the game, hoping that Federer could win in the 5th set. If I wanted him to win badly, then a 5th set win like this would have made me extremely happy until the US Open. I didn’t leave the TV for 6 hours, and it all ended with a forehand error.

You get the feeling that Federer(who has 12 Grand Slams while Pete Sampras holds the record at 14) just wanted to win this match and wouldn’t have cared if he didn’t beat the record because a Grand Slam to him isn’t all that special anymore since he’s won so many, but coming down from 2 sets and saving a couple of match points against your greatest rival would make your career, not 3 more grand slam titles. Nadal will eventually become #1, and Federer should eventually get to 15 Grand Slam titles, and Nadal(5 grand slam titles) might eventually beat Federer’s future record, but this one match will stick with Federer forever. As for Nadal, it would have been horrible to lose 2 match points had he lost, but he would eventually win Wimbledon.

Federer looked really tired at the end. His steps were less crisp and a tad late so he couldn’t set up well for shots, especially on his forehand. The volleys he dumped into the net were also from fatigue and tired movement around the net.

I really felt bad bad bad for Federer, but he showed extraordinary class after the match ended. Only a true champion and a great man like Roger could do that. I still don’t like Nadal’s theatrics, but hats off to him.

GO ROGER, YOU’LL BE BACK!

actually that match was about 4 hrs and 30 minutes. i think this is only good for tennis and makes it interesting. this is federer’s downfall. i can see it already. hes going to do worse and worse and come back to win that last grand slam like pete sampras.

I’m glad Nadal won, hes the only one who has even come close to beating Federer. Hes the only one making Federer even try to win these things and today he deserved the victory.

ok, saving match points doesn’t mean you’re better than your opponent. It has no implication on the whole picture, which is that Rafa has passed Roger up. The better champion won today!!

VAMOS RAFA!!!

Nadal has the face of a rat.

Did anyone notice that Federer would sometimes have an open court or have Nadal on the edge of the court and had an opportunity to blast a winner(a fast one) but he hits it down the middle to get it in because he was too scared to hit it out on an error since he was in this sort of situation(who doesn’t want to win Wimbledon down 2 sets and save 2 match points?), which gave Nadal the chance to get all those points back because Federer didn’t play his game?

Federer only does this type of stuff against Nadal. Nadal makes him unable to concentrate and not play his normal game. If Federer can bounce back to win the US Open, then he’ll be set. Nadal just has to prove that he can win a Hard court Grand Slam Final. But you know what would be even more awesome? Federer beating Nadal in a 5 setter in the 2009 French Open. Nadal is only 22, Federer is almost 27, and in that time span Nadal can win 16-18 Grand Slams if he plays like he’s playing now. That probably won’t happen, but he’s definitely on the verge of dethroning Federer(if you say he’s already dethroned him, he’s only won 1 Wimbledon, Federer has won 5).

I kind of feel bad for nadal, if it weren’t for his bad luck of being around in the time of federer, he would be dominating everything and be the #1 player

He’s done a great job trying to overcome his “bad luck.”

I felt so nervous just watching the match. I wouldn’t have been able to play good tennis at all… imagine how much mental and physical strength both men had!

amazing!
Nadal!

I heard there were visibility problems and that if Federer had come back 8-8 they might have postponed the rest of the match until today.

I was so glad Nadal won. I’m sorry, but I can’t stand Federer. He is amazing though, I will give anyone that.

It was a good match and I was hoping for Federer to win. It is, IMO, probably the best match since the 2005 AO semifinal between Federer and Safin.

In the Fed/Safin match, there were a bunch of lead changes and both guys were playing their absolute best. Safin rose from the dead to beat this dominating robot Federer, saving match points. The shot making in that match was crazy. I think that it was a better match than Nadal/Fed 2008 Wimbledon. In wimbledon this year Fed never had a lead and it always seemed like Rafa was in control, except the tie breaks. Fed’s past his prime now, not the machine that he was in 2005. So it just isn’t as good.

Is Federer going to ever win another major? He’s got Nadal standing in between Wimbledon and Roland-Garros, and Djokovic the hard courts.

Probably. People said the same thing about Sampras after he past his prime and players like Hewitt and Safin were up and coming. But he still won a few slams after the critics said that he was done.

Djokovic can be pretty inconsistent and Nadal won’t ever dominate hardcourts.

It seems odd to me that Nadal can prosper on grass and clay but not on hardcourts. I was thinking it was just variance of outcomes.

Nadal does well on clay because his game is taylor made for it. He does well on grass because it is actually slower now than the american hardcourts and because he moves very well on it. There also aren’t that many players that like playing on grass.

He doesn’t move as well on hardcourts and is actually very injury prone there. There are also many players that like playing on hardcourts (berdych, blake, youzhny, djokovic, etc.) that like smacking down his high bouncing balls.

grass is a lot different from hardcourts. Look at guys like Davydenko who play great on hard courts but suck **** on grass.
