2009-2010 Med school applicants

Shades:

Thanks. If there’s one downside to getting a scholarship like that (I know, I know) is that it’s at the one school I think would limit my opportunities post-graduation. It’s not a name or prestige thing, I think my other state school would be able to get me anywhere, it’s just this school is pretty small and pushes a primary care focus - I have no idea what I want to do, and I want to make sure I have substantial opportunities to experience different things without someone pushing me in a certain direction.

I have a good shot at scholarships at my other state school, MUSC, though. I’d be very happy to go there at any discounted price (my state schools are pretty expensive as far as IS tuition goes).

Texas residency meant “Texas resident status”. Sorry for the confusion.

Yale is next week-end. (Think “no travel delays” ;).) UVa is still hanging in there.

Fantastic steeler. My D is “hoping” for something similar at UTSW. Just submitted FAFSA last week and that is a requirement for scholarships above 1/2 tuition.

"Just submitted FAFSA last week and that is a requirement for scholarships above 1/2 tuition. "

Good luck! Other than federal aid, fafsa etc are a waste of time for us.

Steeler:

Money isn’t everything. If you think it’ll limit your options, that’s a perfectly legitimate reason for not taking it.

You might be able to use that scholarship to get a little more aid out of your top choices, but I imagine it wouldn’t be a whole lot more.

Man, you must be rolling in it. Good for you. ;)

Well, Doc T at UTSW they made a specific point that assets and parental income can be quite high and still allow for grants and scholarships. But, if you are somehow sure your income is still over that high bar …then don’t bother. (They said about 90% of the class gets some grant $) For the rest of the world that is not as sure as Doc T, their advice is “fill it out. It can’t hurt you and may help you.”

steeler, I agree. Don’t go to school that you feel limits your options. You’ve worked too hard. You all have.

This has been a fun trip to Dallas. Lots of good info and I’m leaving with a good feeling about the school, the students, the admin, and the apartment choices. It becomes the bar all others will have to jump over. I got to meet the very knowledgeable and very nice eadad for coffee, too. Thanks again. ;)

I’m leaving early because W and D are going shopping and I’d rather have a railroad spike driven in each eye than go through that. If it was for a dress or interview suit , I’d be O.K. but it’s for a bathing suit and jeans, both the equivalent of an afternoon of hellonearth for a male. I’ve never been to the Wailing Wall but I expect it doesn’t sound much different.

Steeler, I hope she gets to go to second-look at UVa . Are you going?

"Well, Doc T at UTSW they made a specific point that assets and parental income can be quite high and still allow for grants and scholarships. "

Considering no financial aid for D as an undergraduate, I’m very confident that there will be no financial aid for medical school.

Well , then you’ve saved a little time. Confidence is a great thing…in moderation. I’d fill it out even if I had “NBA” money. Some programs just have a check-box requirement. “Did they fill out parents info? Yes. Then they qualify.” Maybe FA at UConn is different than at my D’s schools.

Remember, she still has to do the FAFSA to get any federal loan money.

Here’s a link to UConn FA. It does seem a good deal more limited (less generous). http://studentservices.uchc.edu/financial/scholar_loan.html

I don’t see any mention of non-need based merit aid scholarships but in my experience, schools don’t always put everything out there on the web. Good luck.

Yeah, definitely going to UVa. It’s one of my favorite schools, reflecting back on interview days, curriculums, location, etc. I really like the condensed basic science schools because of the flexibility you get with research and elective rotations, so UVa, Emory, and Duke fit what I want to do pretty well.

Of course, I’m within driving distance (~6 hours) and get 35 mpg on the highway, so transportation costs aren’t an issue. That’d be very cool if she made it down, though.

For financial aid I would fill out the government applications and then just called every school to ask if it is worth your time to do Need Access and other non-merit based applications.

Yep. She loves the condensed pre-clinical at UVa, the location, the campus feel. She’s never lived in that type of environment and even though she knows she won’t have a lot of time to enjoy it, that big-time college “thang” has appeal.

"Maybe FA at UConn is different than at my D’s schools.

Remember, she still has to do the FAFSA to get any federal loan money. "

Its not definite that she will go to UCONN but I do know that not many medical schools have better financial aid than Harvard undergraduate which she received 0.

Just heard from my DS that he has rec’d an invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa. The induction ceremony is in April. I am feeling so proud…

Thought I would share the news with all of you who have in the past shared your successes, lessons learned, and thoughtful advice with me over the years.

Great job Pharmason. ;)

I think I may be going blind. I just screwed up the parent’s section on needaccess . It’s great when you realize 15 minutes after it has been submitted that you overstated an asset by …oh…$75K .

They will just love this correction. That little error won’t raise any flags. Jeebus.

Dear needaccess, Please do not mistake me for a crook when in fact I am an idiot. Worse yet, I am idiot filling out my part of this god-forsaken form at midnight. Signed, Dad

Pff, what’s a little $75K here or there?

As one of my kids teachers told them, nothing good comes out of doing work after 11:00pm.

Well…the kid from the sticks must have fooled somebody…she’s in at Yale Medical School. Straight up acceptance. And the last shall be first…

To Do list

1) Send bottle of everclear to FA
2) Sell kidney
3) Sell W’s kidney
4) Become deep discount man-whore
5) …uhhh…
